GTA 5 Animals Guide: All Animals, Birds, Fish & Peyote Plants

In this section you can find a full guide to the Animal Species featured in Grand Theft Auto V, including all Land Animals, Birds, and Sea Creatures that are part of the GTA V Wildlife and ecosystem.

There is a total of 28 Animal Species in the game, 13 of which are exclusive to the Next Gen (PS4, Xbox One & PC) edition of the game - plus the special presence of Bigfoot. Several of the animals appear in multiple look variations.

With the 1.68 Title Update in December 2023 - over 10 years after the game's release - animals have been officially added to the GTA Online world as well, exclusively for the latest generation consoles - PS5 & Xbox Series X|S.

How to Play as Animals in GTA V

With the Next Gen edition of the game, players are also to control almost all animals by finding special Peyote Plants. After consuming one, the protagonist will fall under a hallucination effect, and temporarily transform into one of the animals. Collecting all the Land & Air Peyote Plants will unlock the "Cryptozoologist" Achievement, and the ability to play as those animals as part of Director Mode.

Also, photographing 20 of these animal species is required for the "Wildlife Photography Challenge" side mission.

There are seven Dog breeds appearing in Grand Theft Auto V, five of which are exclusive to the Next Gen edition. Franklin takes care of Chop, a Rottweiler, and can interact and play with him.

Unlike Land Animals & Birds, the Sea Creatures in GTA V are playable exclusively through the Peyote Plants, as they are not available to be selected in Director's Mode. The Humpback Whale, which is the biggest animal in the entire game, makes exception and is not playable in any way, as there isn't a Peyote Plant that unlocks it.

There are also additional animals and insects in GTA V that cannot be interacted with or only appear as part of specific missions. These include:

• Butterflies: flying around gardens and flowers. They cannot be interacted with.
• Chimpanzees: only appearing in the mission "Did Somebody Say Yoga?".
• Cockroaches: moving around on the ground near dumpsters and trashcans in alleyways. They cannot be killed.
• Flies: small flies floating around trash or plants. They cannot be interacted with.
• Fireflies: appearing in the sky. They cannot be interacted with.
• Monkeys: only appearing in the missions "Monkey Business" and "The Humane Labs Raid".
• Rats: small rats found near tramps and abandoned places. They can be killed.
• Snakes: not moving and only seen in the terrarium
• Starfish: appearing in the water. They cannot be interacted with.
