Concept Update 1: “Living Frontier” Quality-of-Life Update

Quality of Life Changes and Additions:

  • Players can now sell their own horses and saddles for 50% of the purchase price, rather than discarding them.
  • Butcher sale prices are now more in-line with that of story mode.
  • Madam Nazar now has a a "Sell all" button, and her collectables can be filtered in her sell menu.
  • Players can now interact with eachother with two-player interactions and emotes. Some examples of these include:
    • Handshake
    • High-Five
    • Jig
    • Fist bump
    • Hug
  • Players can now choose a suitable stabled horse to pull their personal wagons.
  • Players can now name their weapons at a Gunsmith, under the “Customise” option.
  • Players can now store up to five more horses at their stable.
  • Players can now swap between “Modern” and “Classic” movement styles in Online or create a customised mashup of them both.
    • Modern movement is the Red Dead Online movement seen added with the Frontier Pursuits update, Classic is the movement and gameplay of Singleplayer.
    • Players can personalise their movement down to the following:
      • Walking and running
      • Aiming and shooting
      • Reloading and cocking
      • Diving, strafing, and standing back up
      • Skinning animals
      • Looting corpses
      • Climbing

World Building Changes and Additions:

  • World businesses from singleplayer have returned into Online.
    • The cinemas and theatres will run shows at certain times, which players will be able to purchase tickets for in order to see shows. Doors will remain closed until the show is over.
    • Restaurants and bars will offer food, which the player can carry to the table to eat, offering weight gain and core fortification.
    • More hotel rooms are available, and certain buildings like the Valentine Saloon will now offer hotel services too. A player can book a room for one ingame day and use it as a hub for all of their services.
    • Players can also book bathing rooms once per day, and bathe for up to 10 minutes in order to clean their characters.
  • Wagon fences from single player have returned into Online. Players can steal various wagons and coaches, and sell them to the fence at Emerald Ranch for up to RDO$300, or 3 Gold Bars
  • Players can now break in wild horses in order to stable them or sell them for a price depending on horse quality.
  • More gambling minigames have returned from singleplayer, including Dominos, Blackjack and returning from Red Dead Redemption, Liar’s Dice.
  • Citizens will now spawn in open, lootable houses around the Frontier, and will confront players who try to steal from them.
  • There is now a set of three ferries travelling around Flat Iron Lake and up the Lannahechee River, stopping at Blackwater, The Heartlands, Clemens Point, The Braithwaite Manor, Saint Denis and Annesburg, before looping back round. Players can book a ticket for the Ferry, allowing them to travel long distances for a cheaper price than fast travel posts.
    • It is important to note, much like the Passenger Train and Stagecoach, riding the ferry is not fast travel. Players will have to wait for the journey to pass.
  • Stagecoaches can now be found at all train stations and towns, offering a ride for half the price of fast travel. Up to five people can ride in one stagecoach, having it work like a slightly larger taxi in GTA Online.
  • Passenger Trains have returned from singleplayer, and players can purchase a ticket from any stations, or hijack the train in order to rob the passengers.
  • Continuity issues at Macfarlane’s Ranch, mostly concerning the barn and jailhouse, have been fixed in both singleplayer and Red Dead Online.
    • These structures have been added to the settlement, and RDO players can now deliver bounty targets to the MacFarlane’s Ranch jail or be arrested and sent there themselves.
  • A new dynamic weather event can be seen across all of New Austin: The sandstorm.
  • A new dynamic weather event can be seen across the snowy mountain peaks: The blizzard.
  • New random encounters have been added, including:
    • Blind Man Cassidy, who will tease future content and any missions the player has not yet completed. He will also try to convince players to try out new roles, and on some rare occasions, offer a 5 Gold Bar discount on them.
    • Socialite Stagecoaches, which can be robbed for RDO$ and Gold.
    • NPC Gunslingers and Riders looking for duels and races.
    • Wandering fences and trappers will now randomly show up at the player camp, offering special wares and discounts.

Camp Changes and Additions:

  • Players can now teach tricks to their camp dog, such as roll, fetch, and play dead.
    • Dogs told to “Fetch” will run off from camp, and soon return with either a valuable, a collectible, or a small animal pelt.
  • Camp dogs are now tied to the player tent, rather than the camp. This means there can now be multiple players’ dogs at the one camp.
    • When this happens, the dogs can be seen play fighting or chasing eachother around from time to time.
  • Players can now sleep at their camp in order to regenerate all of their cores and fortify them by one level.
    • Sleeping at camp for around 8 real-world minutes should fortify cores from empty regardless of tent level. Higher-tier tents will yield faster results.
  • Players can now customise the aspects of their camp using different themes on different areas.
    • This means the player can select the theme for the following, individually:
      • Tent
      • Tent-front chair
      • Camp table
      • Camp table chairs
      • Decorative utilities
  • Players can now purchase a provisions table for their camp.
    • Much like in singe player, players can upgrade their camp provisions. After collected by a posse member, these will respawn after one in-game day
    • Tiers:
      • Base: Opened tonics, herbivore bait and food
      • Upgrade 1: Normal tonics, predator bait and better food
      • Upgrade 2: + Base-tier ammo, throwing knives and legendary animal pheromones (If the player has the naturalist role)
      • Upgrade 3: Express rounds, dynamite, bolas, and potent tonics
  • Players now have a ledger in their camp, usually next to the lockbox.
    • This shows any donations made at the camp, money each posse member made from recent sales, ingredients added to the stew pot, collections from the provisions table, or trades made with wandering salesmen.
  • Players can now purchase a wash tub and clothesline for their camp, allowing them to clean the blood, dirt, snow and sand from their outfits.
    • Upon interacting with this item, the player will see a short cutscene of their character in a union suit scrubbing their clothes in the tub.
  • Players can now purchase a “Games Table” for their camp, allowing them to play the many card, dice and domino games Red Dead Online now has to offer.
    • This will not take players into a separate lobby however, allowing posse members and friends to take a low-honour approach and slyly help one another cheat.
  • Up to four guards can now be recruited to work at the camp and will help fend off any attackers.
    • These guards begin with Schofield Revolvers, but can be upgraded for a fee:
      • Weapon Upgrade 1: Bayonet Carbine Repeaters
      • Weapon Upgrade 2: Double-Barrel Shotguns
      • Weapon Upgrade 3: Winchester Repeaters
      • Ammo Upgrade 1: Split-Point Ammo
      • Ammo Upgrade 2: Express Ammo
    • Guards will have discussions with eachother, and Cripps, as well as their own communal tent.
    • If a guard is killed, they can be revived at the Wilderness Outfitters.
  • Players can now purchase improved hitching posts, increasing horse core regeneration.
  • Chores can now be completed at camp, improving goods production time, player and horse core regeneration time, and stew quality.
  • Players can now purchase an easel, allowing them to capture and paint their surroundings, placing it on display next to their tent.
  • If the player has an active moonshine batch, that will be reflected in the “beer crate” at Cripps’ wagon.
  • The player’s Trader Delivery Wagon can now be seen sitting idly at the camp when not in use, along with the horse assigned to it.
    • These cannot be damaged by players.
  • Cripps, and any future camp vendors, will now have their own tent at camp.
  • Guests will now come to camp in order to talk to Cripps, with interesting dialogue able to be overheard.
  • Cripps can now be seen cooking the stew at the camp, with it only being ready during certain times of the day.
    • Players can still add their own flavouring and ingredients, but only when it’s being cooked.
      • Available times:
        • 5AM – 9AM Breakfast
        • 12PM – 2PM Lunch
        • 5PM – 8PM Dinner
        • 10PM – 12AM Supper
    • Up to 20 bowls of food can be taken from the stew pot, before it is empty.
    • An animation has also been added to the stew pot, which features the player picking up a bowl and collecting the stew from the pot.

New Items:

  • Players can now purchase customisable musical instruments, including:
    • The Guitar
    • The Harmonica
    • The Banjo
  • Instruments can be customised with the following:
    • Metals

    • Strings
    • Decorations
  • Custom instruments will harmonise with eachother, playing an assortment of tunes following one lead instrument.
    • If a player is drunk, their music will be botched.
  • One new horse breed has been added: The Lampadati. This is inspired by the real-life horse, “The Ferrari”
    • We really hope you understand this joke
  • Players can now purchase their own stagecoaches, which can be customised with the following:
    • Visual:
      • Wheels and wheel colour
      • Two-tone paint options
      • Liveries
      • Seating materials
    • Functional:
      • Lockbox
        • The lockbox allows posse members to store valuables, collectibles, small pelts, and animal samples.
      • The Weapons Locker
        • The weapons locker allows players to access their full arsenal of weapons from the coach.
  • Players can now purchase a variety of small boats, which can be summoned while near a large body of water.
  • War paint can now be applied to horses at a stable
  • Hairdressers have new content, including:
    • Stick-poke tattoos
    • War paint
    • Makeup for male characters
    • Body hair for arms, torso, and legs
    • Metal piercings
  • The hair and beard systems from singleplayer have returned and are applied to all of the current hair styles.
    • Some of the current hair styles will grow into other existing styles, but plenty of new variations have been added too.
    • Also, all of the hair styles and lengths for male and female characters can now have pomade applied.
    • Much like singleplayer, in order for a player to get max length hair, they must consume growth tonics.
  • Players can now purchase visible satchels from Tailors, General Stores and Gus’ Trapper Store.
  • New categories of clothing have been added, in order to represent different cultures and biome-dependent clothing. This includes the likes of:
    • Kilts

    • Turbans
    • Sand masks help prevent player cores from dropping quickly in sandstorms.
  • A selection of new weapons has been added to the game, including:
    • The Winchester Repeater
    • The Bayonet Carbine
      • This is the classic carbine, with an added Bayonet which can be used to charge enemies. Sprinting with this weapon will begin a charge at double stamina cost.
    • The Pitchfork.
      • This is a large pitchfork, which uses the same charge mechanic as the Bayonet Carbine
    • The Flaming Torch

The Sporting Games:

  • New minigame content has been added to Red Dead Online, in the form of the lucrative “Sporting Games” – An Olympic Style series of minigames with special rewards and prizes.
  • Once per week, players will be able to compete in a match of ‘The Sporting Games’
    • This is an 8 – 20 player series of ten different competitions in order to determine the campions of the Frontier.
    • Sporting Games maps and arenas will change every week.
  • Players can join the games at any time during the week to compete with other players, but upon completing the games they will not be able to re-enter until the next week.
  • Players can enter ‘The Office of the Sporting Games’ and speak to retired French Athlete, and founder of The Sporting Games, Aaron Blanch in order to enter for a fee of RDO$20.
  • Players will compete in one round of each of the ten categories, garnering points based on their performance. The points are totalled in the end to determine the winner.
  • The top three contestants across The Sporting Games will receive the following prizes:
    • First place: RDO$20,000 and a ‘Gold Medal’ neckwear.
    • Second place: RDO$10,000 and a ‘Silver Medal’ neckwear.
    • Third place: RDO$5000 and a ‘Bronze Medal’ neckwear.
  • The rest of the contestants will receive somewhere between RDO$1000 and $150 depending on their leaderboard placement.
  • If a player earns a total of three gold medals, they will be awarded with the ‘Ruby Medallion Gun Belt Trinket’ which will decrease the time required to lose a wanted level.
  • Being the most valuable player in one of the individual games will also award players with a prize.
  • Players can train for each of the games by either practising naturally in the wild, or by travelling to various destinations around the Frontier in order to train with a professional.
  • The setlist of games includes the following:
    • The Caber Toss
      • Contestants spin a large log in the air and must throw it farther than any of their competitors.

      • MVP prize: Hermes Wings Spurs, adding 20% sprint speed and stamina when equipped.
    • The Relay
      • A collaborative race in which players are randomly placed in teams of two (This will favour possies and friends). One partner must run round a set track and pass the baton to their teammate who must finish the race.

      • MVP prize: Throwing baton, which is a concussive, non-lethal throwing weapon which will knock out any target with a headshot or knock them over if it hits the body.

      • MVP prize: Swimming Flippers, which allow double swimming speed, but half running speed, when worn.
    • Shooting
      • Plates are thrown into the air. Players must shoot the most plates within the time limit.

      • These live events will be seen from the player’s perspective, as they hang back behind corners and away from all the action.
    • Players can now collect Van Der Linde gang bounty posters from around the map, and turn them in to Hosea for 0.25 Gold

Justification:

Red Dead Redemption 2 has one of the most dynamic, living, breathing worlds in any videogame seen to date. Red Dead Online, for some reason strips down what was seen in RDR2 for a much emptier experience. It feels almost lonely. Combined with a little random jank here and there, it is nothing in comparison to RDR2. This is why I felt it required a big update offering mostly quality-of-life features, with some additional smaller pieces of content just to keep the update feeling fresh.

Perhaps this wouldn’t be the big, life-changing update we’re all looking for, especially after the news of there being no 2021 Winter update, but it would be something to lay the foundations to help Red Dead Online become the best online videogame experience around.

Bringing all of the singleplayer world elements back, with some new features for the camp, more minigames, skills, and a variety of new weapons customisation options and mechanics to keep the game fresh would at least bring the quality of the world up to RDR2’s level.

I know setting up for seasonal events will be extremely controversial to begin with, but having a dynamic way of slowly progressing the Red Dead Online world with each DLC update through each of the RDR2 story beats with each and into the epilogue will also help keep the world feeling fresh and new, whilst bringing players back to check out what the Van Der Linde gang are up to now, from a new perspective. The hope is that it will also help push players who haven’t checked out the story yet to do so.
