A few hours ago, Sony PlayStation announced that PS4 users will finally be able to change their PSN Online ID. This feature it's not actually available yet but should be up in a few hours!

EDIT: you can now change your PSN ID

Keep reading for all the details...

All PS4 games originally published on or after April 1 2018, have been developed to support the online ID change feature. However, since they have not all been specifically tested with the feature, it's not guarantee that they will support it. For more details and information, check out this before making a change to your online ID. Do keep in mind that the large majority of most actively played PS4 games support the feature.

How to change your PSN ID:

PlayStation 4:

  • Step 1: From your PS4 go to [Settings].
  • Step 2: Select [Account Management] > [Account Information] > [Profile] > [Online ID].
  • Step 3: Enter an Online ID of your choice or choose from one of the suggestions.
  • Step 4: Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the change.

Web browser:

  • Step 1: Sign in to your PlayStation Network account and select PSN Profile in the menu.
  • Step 2: Select the Edit button that’s next to your Online ID.
  • Step 3: Enter an Online ID of your choice or choose from one of the suggestions.
  • Step 4: Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the change.

As for GTA 5 / GTA Online, has been listed among the "Games with Issues Identified". This means that you may experience minor issues like:

  • Previous online IDs may remain visible to you and other players, or the online ID is no longer visible in some areas of the game (game rankings, rankings, etc.). In some games, the online ID will update automatically if you log out and then log back into the game or when various game activities are performed after logging in.
  • PlayStation user accounts may be disconnected from game accounts. Connecting the accounts again could restore the original link.
  • Some game settings may be reset to their default status (audio settings, controller settings, etc.). In some games, you may be able to retrieve the settings if you log out and log back in to the game.

As for RDR 2 / Red Dead Online, it doesn't appear in any list, this means that it should not cause any problems, but it could also mean that it has not been tested yet. We believe that, having been released recently, no issue should occur but we suggest you not to hurry and wait a few days before changing your PSN ID.
