Rockstar Games spent the better part of a decade trying to keep Grand Theft Auto VI a secret. It did not go well. Between anonymous insiders, leaked maps, a hacked Slack channel, and a trailer that escaped a day early, GTA 6 has a strong claim to being the most leaked game ever made, and the pile of claims is now so big that it is genuinely hard to remember which ones turned out to be true.
This page sorts it out. Every major GTA 6 leak and rumor since the first whispers in 2018 is listed below in order, with Rockstar's official milestones in between as anchor points. Each entry gets a verdict based on what is known today, and links to our original coverage where we have it.
2018 to 2021: Codenames, Fake Maps and a Lot of Guessing
March 2018: "Project Americas"
Verdict: Partly True
The first rumor with real staying power came from The Know, a YouTube channel that claimed insider sources. According to them, the next GTA was internally called Project Americas, would be based in Miami, and would let players fly between the United States and South America during missions. We covered it at the time in GTA 6 Location and Lead Character Rumours.
Half of it aged remarkably well. GTA 6 is set in Vice City, Rockstar's take on Miami. The other half did not: the confirmed map is the state of Leonida, with no South America in sight. The codename itself has never been officially confirmed by Rockstar, though the September 2026 entry below adds an interesting twist.
2019: Ricardo, Kacey and a Wall of Reddit Text
Verdict: Debunked
In mid-2019, a long Reddit post claiming sources at Take-Two expanded on Project Americas with oddly specific details: a 1970s and 1980s setting, a drug-lord-in-the-making protagonist called Ricardo, a character named Kacey, a Rio de Janeiro-inspired city and a giant prison. It spread everywhere, partly because it was detailed enough to sound true.
Almost none of it survived contact with reality. GTA 6 is set in the present day and stars Jason and Lucia. Ricardo, if he ever existed, is still waiting for his call. The same year brought a stream of smaller claims that went nowhere, including a supposed coded message in a Glassdoor job listing and three "leaked" images posted by a Reddit user who deleted them shortly after. Setting guesses at the time ranged across several continents, and plenty of fans expected a smaller episodic release in the mould of The Ballad of Gay Tony long before a full sequel.
2018 to 2021: The Fake Map Era

No genre of GTA 6 leak has been more popular, or less accurate, than the leaked map. In December 2018, a series of crude map images appeared that were widely dismissed as amateur work. In October 2020, a blurry island posted on 4chan was matched by fans to one of those 2018 images and briefly revived the whole thing. Then in July 2021, a much more polished "new Vice City map" did the rounds with locations and activities attached, and we covered it in A New Vice City GTA 6 Map Has Been Leaked.
That one was later proven to be fake. The real map, when it finally surfaced, looked nothing like any of them.
2022: The Year Everything Came Out
February 2022: Rockstar Finally Says It Out Loud
Official milestone
After years of silence, Rockstar confirmed on its Newswire that development of the next Grand Theft Auto was well underway. No name, no setting, no date. But for the first time, the existence of the game was a fact rather than a rumor.
July 2022: Bloomberg's Report
Verdict: Confirmed
Bloomberg's Jason Schreier published a report on Rockstar's changing studio culture that included the first credible details about the game itself. His sources said GTA 6 would feature a Latina female protagonist, one half of a duo in a story influenced by Bonnie and Clyde, set mainly in a fictional version of Miami. The report also said Rockstar planned to expand the world with new missions and cities after launch. We covered the details in GTA 6 Female Protagonist, Map Details and Release Timeline.
The core of it has since been confirmed by Rockstar's own trailers: Lucia, her partner Jason, and Vice City. The post-launch expansion plans are still unresolved, since Rockstar has not detailed its update roadmap.
September 18, 2022: The Biggest Leak in Rockstar's History
Verdict: Confirmed
On the night of September 18, a user called teapotuberhacker posted more than 90 videos from an early development build of GTA 6 on GTAForums, along with claims of having the source code for both GTA 5 and GTA 6. The same person claimed to be behind a recent hack of Uber, and said they were looking to negotiate a deal with Rockstar.
The footage was rough, unfinished and immediately everywhere. It showed a Vice City setting, a female protagonist and a robbery sequence that matched the Bonnie and Clyde reporting almost exactly. Take-Two filed takedowns across YouTube and community sites, and the next day Rockstar confirmed it had suffered a network intrusion, calling itself extremely disappointed and saying development would continue as planned. The reaction split the internet. Part of the audience mocked the unfinished visuals as if they were final, which prompted developers across the industry to post their own early, ugly builds in solidarity with the Rockstar team. Others simply went through every frame, and so did we: dozens of entries in our GTA 6 Weapons and GTA 6 Vehicles databases still note that they were first spotted in the leaked footage of September 18, 2022. 2023: A Leaked Trailer and a Sentence
November 2023: The Reveal Is Announced
Official milestone
Rockstar confirmed that the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto would arrive in early December, timed with the studio's 25th anniversary.
December 4, 2023: The Trailer Leaks a Day Early
Verdict: Confirmed
The trailer was scheduled for December 5. On the evening of December 4 (US time, already the early hours of December 5 in Europe), a low-quality copy appeared on X, complete with a "BUY $BTC" watermark across it. Rather than wait it out, Rockstar pulled the release forward and posted the real thing within hours, with a message that doubled as a shrug: "Our trailer has leaked so please watch the real thing on YouTube."
The trailer confirmed Vice City, the state of Leonida, Lucia as a lead and a 2025 release window on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Our Trailer 1 coverage has the full breakdown.
December 2023: The 2022 Hacker Is Sentenced
Verdict: Confirmed
The person behind the September 2022 leak turned out to be Arion Kurtaj, an 18-year-old member of the Lapsus$ hacking group from Oxford. At the time of that hack, he was on bail for earlier attacks on Nvidia and BT/EE, staying in a Travelodge under police protection with his laptop confiscated. He breached Rockstar anyway, using the hotel TV, an Amazon Fire Stick and a newly bought phone.
Rockstar told the court the hack had cost it around $5 million and thousands of staff hours. Kurtaj was ordered to be detained indefinitely in a secure hospital. In July 2026, BBC journalist Joe Tidy reported on social media that he had been moved to a regular prison ahead of a retrial set for November 2026, which puts it in the same month GTA 6 finally launches.
2024: Back to the Office
February 2024: Remote Work Ends
Studio change, reported by Bloomberg
The leaks had consequences inside the studio too. In an email to staff reviewed by Bloomberg, Rockstar's Head of Publishing Jenn Kolbe told employees they would be returning to the office five days a week from April 2024, citing productivity and security. The report tied the decision directly to the 2022 footage dump and the leaked trailer, and noted that staff were not thrilled about it.
2025: Two Delays
May 2025: Pushed to May 26, 2026
Official milestone
On May 2, 2025, Rockstar moved GTA 6 out of its 2025 window to May 26, 2026. Four days later, on May 6, it shadow-dropped the second trailer, which introduced Jason Duval properly and expanded on Leonida well beyond Vice City. This one, for the record, did not leak first. November 2025: Pushed Again to November 19, 2026
Official milestone
Six months later came a second delay, to November 19, 2026. Rockstar apologised for adding time to what it acknowledged had been a long wait, and said the extra months were needed for polish. Take-Two's stock dropped sharply in after-hours trading. By now, the gap between GTA 5 and GTA 6 had grown past 13 years.
2026: The Leaks Strike Back
August 2026: Cyberleek
Verdict: Confirmed
On August 6, Rockstar announced Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, its first proper gameplay showcase, premiering on Netflix on August 27. On August 18, nine days before it aired, a persona calling itself Cyberleek began posting gameplay clips and map data from in-development builds, covering the map, melee combat, an honor-style system and more. Take-Two responded on August 20 by filing DMCA subpoenas against Microsoft and Discord in a New York federal court, seeking account data, IP addresses and device identifiers for anyone linked to the persona. That legal action effectively signals the footage is genuine. How old it is remains disputed: most reporting, including ours, places the first clips in a build from around 2023, but a later clip has a song released in 2025 playing on the radio, which suggests at least some of the material is more recent. Either way, several things shown may not match the final game. Cyberleek framed the leaks as a protest against the all-digital release and what it called fake single-player DLC, apparently a jab at the Ultimate Edition's bonus content, while also using the attention to promote a meme coin. GTA 6 leakers, it turns out, have a type.
Shortly before the Extended Look aired, Rockstar and Take-Two broke their public silence, calling the leaks heartbreaking and apologising for not speaking sooner. Bloomberg also reported that a senior Rockstar executive sent staff an internal email acknowledging the frustration across the studio. Having given up remote work in 2024 partly to stop exactly this, a second leak landed especially hard with developers.
August 27, 2026: An Extended Look
Official milestone
The Extended Look premiered on Netflix as planned, and reached Rockstar's YouTube channel and the GTA 6 website six hours later. For the second time in three years, Rockstar's big reveal arrived with players having already seen part of it in worse quality. Our Extended Look coverage goes through all 26 minutes.
September 2026: The 2015 Map Nobody Was Meant to See
Verdict: Real, but over a decade old
Two months before launch, an archive of roughly 200GB linked to the 2022 breach resurfaced online. Most of it is an old GTA V development build, frozen around 2015, but tucked inside were early GTA VI prototype assets, which file metadata dates to 2015.
Modders extracted the early map data and got it running inside GTA V on PC, which means people are, technically, driving around Leonida before release. Just not the Leonida anyone has seen in trailers: foliage is almost absent, textures are basic, and much of the map looks like a flat, Google Maps-style planning model. One modder also got it working in FiveM, but has no plans to release it, since both Cfx.re and Rockstar ban leaked assets. Take-Two has been taking down footage of it.
The interesting part is what isn't in the final game. Fans piecing the files together report cut areas in the north and south, including a version of Key West and a section representing South America. None of this is confirmed by Rockstar. But if it holds up, The Know's 2018 "Project Americas" claim about flying between the US and South America may not have been invented after all. It was just out of date.
The Fakes That Keep Coming Back
Some claims resurface every few months with a new coat of paint. If you see any of these, be suspicious by default:
- The "real" map. A new one appears roughly every season. Unless it comes from Rockstar or matches established mapping projects, assume it is fan work.
- Leaked release dates and delays. Every rumored delay since 2025 has come with a screenshot of an "internal document". The only dates that matter are the ones Rockstar publishes.
- AI-generated screenshots. Increasingly convincing, and almost always shared without a source. If nobody can say where an image came from, that is your answer.
- "Early access" offers. No edition of GTA 6 includes early access. Anyone selling it is selling you nothing.
- Anything attached to a crypto coin. From the 2023 trailer watermark to Cyberleek's meme coin, a surprising number of GTA 6 leaks have come with something to buy.
What's Still Unresolved
- Post-launch expansion. Bloomberg's 2022 report of new cities and missions added over time has never been confirmed.
- A disc version. Reports point in opposite directions. See our GTA 6 Launch Prep Guide for the current state of play.
