Playing GTA V across multiple platforms for more than a decade has made the wait for GTA 6 feel especially long. Thirteen years, three console generations, one game. On November 19, 2026, after two delays, Grand Theft Auto VI finally arrives on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The waiting is almost over. But discovering at 11:58 PM that your console has 40GB free is still very much on the table.
This guide covers what you can sort out before launch night: when to pre-load, how much space to clear, which edition to buy, and the import mistake that can leave you holding a code you can't redeem. It also separates what Rockstar has confirmed from what the internet decided on its own.

Step 1: Choose Your Edition
There are two GTA 6 editions, and there's less pressure here than you might think.
- Standard Edition: $79.99 / €79,99.
- Ultimate Edition: $99.99 / €99,99, digital only, adding premium vehicles, weapons, and apparel across both Jason and Lucia's story.
- Vintage Vice City Pack: free with every pre-order and every purchase made before November 20, according to Rockstar.
- Ultimate Edition Upgrade: Standard owners can buy it separately at any time.
The euro prices already include VAT, which is why they aren't a straight conversion of the dollar ones. Rockstar also prices market by market, so your own storefront decides. Converted into dollars, the Standard Edition runs from around $58 in South Korea to over $100 in Israel. Check your own store rather than any comparison chart, including the ones that go viral on Reddit.
For anyone unsure which edition to choose, the Standard Edition gives you the pre-order bonus, while the Ultimate Edition adds additional digital content. The Ultimate Edition Upgrade can also be purchased separately by Standard owners, so there is no need to make the decision immediately.
If you're less sure than some other players, buy Standard. You keep the pre-order bonus, and the upgrade isn't going anywhere.

Watch the GTA+ Month
Digital pre-orders include a free month of GTA+. According to the PlayStation Store terms, that membership renews automatically at the regular monthly price until you cancel, and it's limited to one redemption per account. Set a reminder unless you enjoy surprise subscriptions.
Step 2: Buying Physical? Read This First
For players who prefer physical copies, there is an important catch. The physical version contains a download code rather than a game disc. In practice, you're buying a plastic case with a piece of paper in it.
What that means in practice:
- Timing matters. Boxes are expected at retailers from November 12, and pre-load codes work as soon as you have them. If yours arrives by post on the 18th, you've lost most of your pre-load week.
- A redeemed code is tied to your account. No lending, no reselling, no trading it in when you're done.
- There is no physical Ultimate Edition. You can buy the upgrade digitally once your Standard code is redeemed.
- No free GTA+ month. Rockstar's support page lists that under digital pre-orders only.
The Import Trap
PlayStation codes only work on accounts from the same region group as the country of purchase, and the United Kingdom is its own group, separate from mainland Europe. A cheap UK copy will not redeem on a Belgian, Dutch or German PSN account.
On the other hand, Xbox codes are not region-locked.
Will There Ever Be a Disc?
Maybe. Nobody can tell you for certain, and the reporting openly contradicts itself:
- Rockstar has hinted at one. Support emails to pre-order customers said a physical copy would follow in the months after launch. No date, no format, no details.
- A leaker says December. Polish outlet PPE.pl, citing insider Graczdari, reports a proper disc edition coming in December 2026, just before the holidays. That same source correctly called the code-in-a-box move back in March, when almost nobody believed it.
- Another report says never. A source cited by The Hollywood Reporter claims Rockstar has no plans for a retail disc version at all, launch or later.
None of it is confirmed. If owning a disc genuinely matters to you, the honest advice is to wait and watch rather than buy a code-in-a-box now and hope. If you just want to play on November 19, none of this changes anything.
Step 3: Clear Storage Before the Size Is Announced
Rockstar has not announced a file size for GTA 6 yet. Everything you've seen is a guess. Figures doing the rounds run from 200GB up to 676GB, and none of them come from a reliable source. That last number is bigger than the entire usable storage of a launch PS5, so Sony would be selling a console that can't hold its biggest game.
For context, Red Dead Redemption 2 asked for roughly 105GB on PS4 in 2018. Expect more than that and plan accordingly:
- Delete or move big games now. PS5 and Series X|S games can be parked on a USB drive and moved back later.
- Xbox Series S owners, this is mostly about you. The 512GB model leaves around 364GB for games.
- Don't buy extra storage yet. The store listing will show the real size before pre-load opens. Buy then, if you need to.
Step 4: Start Your Pre-Load on November 12
Rockstar's support page states that pre-loading begins at local midnight on November 12, 2026, for anyone with a digital pre-order. That gives you a full week, which matters if your connection treats large downloads as a personal insult.
- Switch on automatic downloads. On PS5 that's Settings → Saved Data and Game/App Settings; on Xbox it sits under Preferences.
- Let the console stay connected. Rest mode (PS5) and Sleep mode (Xbox) keep downloading while you sleep.
- Pre-loading is not early access. The files sit on your drive, locked, until launch.
Start on day one anyway. A launch-day patch would surprise nobody, and you want room for problems.
Step 5: When Does GTA 6 Actually Unlock?
This is where the misinformation lives. Rockstar has only given a date. No launch hour appears on its official site or in the pre-order announcement. What we do have are store listings.
Regional PlayStation Store pages currently show a rolling rollout, starting in New Zealand at 11:00 UTC on November 18 and finishing 19 hours later in Mexico and Central America.
That points to midnight local time, which matches how Rockstar handled GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2.
Several sites claim a single global unlock at 5:00 AM UTC instead. That isn't confirmed by anyone who would know. Check the countdown on your own store page during launch week and trust that over any timezone calculator.
One more thing: early access is not listed among the Ultimate Edition's contents. Anyone selling "GTA 6 early access" is selling you nothing.
What About PC and Last-Gen Consoles?
Rockstar has confirmed only two platforms so far: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
PS4 and Xbox One are obviously not on that list, and there is no announced PC version. No date, no window, no pre-order page. Plenty of PC players expect a longer wait this time, with 2027 or beyond doing the rounds, but that's a fear rather than a date.
What we can look at is Rockstar's own track record, which is consistent enough to be useful:
- GTA V launched on consoles in September 2013 and reached PC in April 2015, around 19 months later.
- Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in October 2018 and reached PC in November 2019, around 13 months later.
A pattern is not a promise. But if you're a PC player wondering whether to buy a console for this, history suggests you'd be waiting roughly a year rather than forever. Whether that's worth €500 of hardware is between you and your patience.
