Rockstar Games appears to be doubling down on its efforts to keep the GTA 6 cast under wraps, reminding performers that their non-disclosure agreements remain in effect until the game's November 19 release. The reported reminder comes shortly after actor Stephen Root publicly confirmed his involvement in GTA 6, despite Rockstar traditionally keeping its cast members' identities secret before launch.
Root's comments made headlines last week when he confirmed to the Associated Press that he appears in GTA 6 as the voice and actor for Brian Heder, the veteran drug runner who serves as a mentor and landlord to Jason Duval.
Fans had already largely picked up on Root’s iconic voice in the early trailers of the game, perhaps in part because he voiced both Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland in King of the Hill. Root echoed this fact in the interview, pointing out how it was almost impossible to keep his involvement a secret after extensive promotional material had been released.
What some fans might not know is that Stephen Root is a prolific actor who has been performing for over four decades. Root has appeared in many iconic film and television roles over the years, including his most recent turn as Wyck Crawford in the critically lauded Widow’s Bay, an effort which earned him an Emmy award just last week. This is Root’s second award in the Best Supporting Actor category, with his first win coming in 2019 with Barry, in which he played the controlling hitman, Monroe Fuches.
Root was also born in Sarasota, Florida, a fact that was almost certainly not lost on the GTA VI casting department, who based their fictional state of Leonida on the Sunshine State.
With Rockstar reportedly asking GTA 6 performers to remain silent about their involvement until launch, Root's confirmation is likely to remain one of the few pieces of casting information we get before November 19. More importantly, it gives us a closer look at Brian Heder, a character who has already played a memorable role in GTA 6's promotional material.
Who is Brian Heder in GTA 6?
Brian is an older drug runner in Vice City who acts as a mentor and benefactor to protagonist Jason Duval. Brian allows Jason to live rent-free in an apartment he owns on the condition that he deals with certain criminal elements that are involved with Brian’s drug enterprise.
Brian was given an especially important role in the extended look of the game on Netflix. At the end of the half-hour exhibition, Brian pulls Jason aside and tells him a parable of loss and control. He explains that a carousel came to town when he was young, and that after it was cranked up to max speed, he decided to get off the ride. His friend did not and was injured badly. Brian specifically tells Jason, “You gotta know when to get off.”
This particularly philosophical exchange between the two left fans salivating for the full game so that they might finally see how high the stakes are on the “ride” that is GTA VI.
What is Stephen Root Best Known For?
Stephen Root is perhaps best known for his role as Milton Waddams in Office Space. If that character’s name isn’t ringing a bell, it’s probably because he is really only known for one main scene in the film, in which he claims ownership of a stapler.
For those with an HBO subscription, Root is probably better known for roles in which he was more prominent. One that comes to mind is his turn as Gaston Means in the hit historical crime saga, Boardwalk Empire. Root played a wily special investigator based on the real-life Means, and was a mainstay for seasons 3 and 4. Closely tied to Attorney General Harry Daugherty’s political camp, Root both impressed and creeped fans out as the swindling fixer.
In addition to that role, Root also had second billing next to Bill Hader’s Barry in the dark comedic series of the same name. As Monroe Fuches, Root was a surrogate father figure to Barry and taught him everything he eventually came to know about killing. Fuches was ruthless, soulless, and generally an all-around monster, though his intimate interactions with Barry often bordered on nostalgic sentiment. On more than one occasion, the writers of the show had Fuches appear in touching family-style moments with Hader doing his best to appear vulnerable. Fuches was one of the few characters who really knew Barry, and it shows in these standout scenes.
By the time The Man in the High Castle rolled around in 2015, Root had solidified himself as an eerie and often mystifying character actor. When he was cast as Hawthorne Abendsen in the sci-fi adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s alternative history novel about World War II, he was front and center for setting up some of the key elements of the plot. Root literally plays “the man in the high castle,” an author who writes a book within the book, and provides advice and guidance to the resistance movement in the US. The character of Abendsen also collects newsreels from our own historical timeline to show a counter-history within the show.
In his most recent role, Root portrays Wyck Crawford in AppleTV’s Widow’s Bay, a seemingly annoying community member who brings attention to the supernatural elements within the town. Playing expertly off fellow Emmy-winner Matthew Rhys’ Mayor Tom Loftis, the show was a major success, winning a total of 14 Emmy Awards at the 2026 ceremony. Crawford is a character considered eccentric by the other townspeople, a trait that longtime fans of Root will know and cherish him for.
What Does Stephen Root Bring to the Role of Brian Heder?
Stephen Root has often been known for his uncanny and macabre portrayals of characters on the outskirts of moral society. Memorable roles as criminals and creeps are scattered throughout his filmography, and those experiences directly tie in to this latest role as Brian Heder. Root also has the odd quality of being able to turn those darker tones into satisfying comedic moments, an ability which is showcased in the pre-release footage of GTA VI.
Heder is the owner of Brian’s Boat Works & Marina, a location which has allowed him to smuggle drugs since the 1980s. Since little is known about the deeper aspects of the character, one quote from the trailer might capture it perfectly: “I hauled so much grass in that plane, I could make the state of Leonida levitate.” He tells this to his protege Jason Duval. This is one of the first times fans got to see the dynamic between Brian and Jason and is a good indicator of how the story might go.
Heder himself lives outside the laws of Leonida. He transports drugs and brings them into the country, where there is a great demand for becoming numb. If one were to consider the footage shown to fans thus far of the game, including citizens battling alligators, streamers popping out of trunks, and general death by smartphone consumption, there is a lot out there to distract Leonidans from the stale lives they lead.
While we wait for the rest of the cast to be officially announced, fans can rejoice in the fact that the very special character of Brian is being handled by a mega-capable actor in the form of Stephen Root.
