Money is much more important in GTA 6 than it was in previous Grand Theft Auto games.
Rockstar is giving players more ways to make money in free roam, while also making money directly relevant to the game's story. Instead of simply earning cash from missions and spending it on upgrades, players will have to manage different types of money, sell stolen goods through fences and, at certain points, make enough money to continue the story.
Here is everything we currently know about how to make money in GTA 6, including robberies, fences, cash, story money requirements, and what you can spend your money on.
How Money Works in GTA 6
GTA 6 has three different types of money:
- Bank money is stored in your BuckMe account and is safe.
- Cash is the physical money you're carrying, with a maximum of $20,000. This can be lost if you die, so you'll need to visit an ATM to deposit it into your bank account.
- Duffel bag loot represents the value of stolen goods you're carrying. Unlike cash, this cannot simply be deposited into a bank. You'll need to take the stolen items to a fence.
This creates an important money-making loop:
Steal → escape → fence the loot → receive cash → deposit the cash → spend or save it.
How to Make Money in GTA 6

Robberies are one of the main ways players can make money in GTA 6 outside of story missions. Based on information shared by TGG after its visit to Rockstar North, there are five broad levels of criminal activity.
1. Rob Local Stores
The easiest opportunities are small businesses such as convenience stores, phone repair shops, gas stations, and other local businesses.
These robberies are expected to pay a couple of thousand dollars at most.
The important part is that they don't necessarily appear on the map. Rockstar has said players can attempt to rob any store they walk into, meaning you can create your own opportunities while exploring Vice City and the wider world.
2. Rob Jewelry Stores
Jewelry stores are higher-value targets and can appear on the map as money-making opportunities.
When one is marked, players can reportedly hover over it to see an estimated potential take, making it easier to decide which target is worth pursuing.
3. Rob Banks
Banks represent another major robbery tier in GTA 6 and can also appear on the map with an estimated value.
These will naturally carry more risk than a small store robbery, but should offer considerably greater rewards.
4. Raid Criminal Compounds
GTA 6 also features numerous criminal and gang compounds that can contain cash, drugs, and other valuable items.
These locations don't necessarily have to be found through map markers. You can learn about them through people you meet, story events, or simply by discovering them while exploring.
Stolen goods from compounds can then be taken to the appropriate fence.

5. Take Part in Heists
The biggest robberies are the major story heists.
GTA 6 has already shown large-scale heist sequences, including Jason and Lucia targeting heavily secured locations. It is not yet clear whether this scale of heist will be available as repeatable free-roam activities or primarily as part of the story.
There are also vans that appear to offer smaller, mini-heist-style opportunities around the map.
Not Every Robbery Will Be on Your Map
One of the biggest differences from GTA 5 is how players discover robberies.
Some larger opportunities can appear on the GTA 6 map, but Rockstar is also encouraging players to find them organically.
You may:
- Get a tip from an NPC
- Meet someone during the story who gives you information
- Overhear a conversation
- Follow a lead
- Discover a valuable location yourself
That means simply exploring Leonida and paying attention to the people around you could lead directly to new ways of making money in GTA 6.

GTA 6 Robberies Are More Detailed
Even a simple store robbery can involve more than just pointing a gun at a cashier. Rather than simply walking up to a cash register and taking whatever money is available, players may have to break into safes to access valuable loot.
Doing so can require obtaining a combination, which may involve searching the environment for clues or speaking to NPCs. Robberies can also involve dealing with security cameras and making use of backdoors as potential escape routes.
NPCs can also react dynamically. Store employees, security guards, or ordinary civilians may try to intervene rather than simply standing around while you rob the place.
As a result, the same type of robbery can play out differently depending on the location and circumstances.

You Need a Fence to Sell Stolen Goods
Getting the loot is only half the job.
Valuable items stored in your duffel bag need to be taken to a fence, a black-market contact who converts stolen goods into usable money.
Different types of loot can require different fences. There are different contacts for things such as:
- Jewelry
- Drugs
- Cars
- Other stolen goods
Fences are also tied to progression. You may have to meet or unlock certain contacts before you can sell particular types of loot.
So, successfully stealing something does not necessarily mean the player can immediately spend its full value. This adds another layer to the risk-and-reward system surrounding robberies.
Players have to not only pull off the robbery itself, but also figure out what to do with the goods afterward. If players are caught before obtaining usable cash or before depositing said cash into their bank accounts, they can end up gaining nothing out of an otherwise perfectly fine robbery attempt.
Don't Carry Too Much Cash

Cash is different from money in your bank account.
If you're carrying physical cash and die, you can potentially lose it. Once you reach an ATM, you can deposit it into your bank account and protect those earnings.
That makes it worth regularly securing your money instead of constantly carrying everything you've earned.
Duffel bag loot is also at risk until you've successfully reached the appropriate fence.
Money Can Be Required to Progress the Story

The freedom to rob any store in the game is particularly important because money is set to play a major role in GTA 6's story.
According to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, there will be points where the game slows down or stops story progression until you reach certain cash goals.
Rockstar hasn't revealed exactly how much money you'll need or what every requirement is.The important difference is that GTA 6 can effectively tell you: You need more money. Go out and find a way to get it.
Instead of forcing you to complete one specific money-making mission, the game can leave the choice up to you. You could rob stores, target a bank, raid a compound, or pursue another opportunity you've discovered.
This makes free-roam money-making much more important to the main story than it was in past GTA games, where making money was still the focus but didn't necessarily interfere with gameplay.
What Can You Spend Money On in GTA 6?

Rockstar has already shown several things players can spend money on, including:
- Vehicles and vehicle customization
- Weapons
- Garages
- Clothes
- Makeup
- Hairstyles
- Headphones and earbuds
You can also pay to register stolen vehicles as personal vehicles, although high-end vehicles may require additional progression before they can be registered.
Can You Buy Safe Houses?
Current information suggests that Jason and Lucia won't simply be able to purchase safehouses, apartments, or mansions whenever they want.
Rockstar stated that their status as fugitives would make traditional property ownership difficult to fit into the story.
Can You Buy Businesses?
This remains unclear.
Rockstar has not given a definitive answer on whether businesses will be purchasable in GTA 6's single-player campaign, so this should be considered unconfirmed for now.
What Is the Best Way to Make Money in GTA 6?
We won't know the fastest money-making method until GTA 6 launches and the final exact payouts are known.
For now, the most effective approach will likely be to mix different types of opportunities rather than relying on a single source of income.
Use small stores when you need quick cash, target larger marked robberies when the potential reward is worth the risk, and pay attention to NPCs and the world around you for opportunities that don't appear on the map.
Most importantly, remember to fence valuable loot and deposit physical cash so that the money you've earned is actually safe and usable.

Is there a GTA 6 Money Cheat?
It's currently unconfirmed whether GTA 6 will have a money cheat. Previous games have varied, with GTA San Andreas and GTA III featuring money cheats, while GTA Vice City and GTA 5 did not.
A money cheat can be a tricky addition for Rockstar, as unlimited cash could undermine the game's economy and progression. If one is confirmed, we'll add it to our guides on GTA 6 Cheats for PS5 and GTA 6 Cheats for Xbox.
GTA 6 Money-Making Guide: The Bottom Line

GTA 6 is making money a much bigger part of the overall experience.
Players aren't limited to earning money from missions anymore. You can rob small stores, target jewelry stores and banks, raid criminal compounds, discover mini-heists, find opportunities through NPCs, and take part in major story heists.
At the same time, the three-part money system means you have to think about what you've stolen, where your cash is stored, and whether you have access to the right fence.
Most importantly, earning money can actually become necessary for story progression.
That gives players a real reason to explore Leonida, take risks, and experiment with the game's criminal economy rather than simply following the next mission marker.
