Sayonara Salvatore is a main story mission in GTA 3, given to Claude by Asuka Kasen.

It's the 31° mission in GTA III in chronological order, and it takes place in Staunton Island. It becomes available after completing Last Requests.

Claude wants to make an alliance with the Yakuza.

GTA III: "Sayonara Salvatore" Tips & Tricks

Sayonara Salvatore is a mission given to Claude by Asuka Kasen, a high-ranking member of the Yakuza. After being exiled from Mafia turf in Portland, Asuka offers the protagonist some work within her organization. He must first prove that his ties to those who tried killing him are over by getting rid of Salvatore, the don of the Leone crime family. 

Get Acquainted with Staunton Island

Sayonara Salvatore is the first mission on this island. So if you are new to the game, take some time to cruise around before heading over to Asuka's place. Take note of a few important locations, like the local gun shop, your safehouse, and the bridge between Portland and Staunton Island. It may be wise to go to Ammu-Nation and pick up a machine gun and extra ammo. 

Going Back to Portland

After the cutscene ends, you'll have roughly two and a half minutes to make it over to the Red Light District and stake out Luigi's club. Hop into the Yakuza Stinger outside of Asuka's condo and take the Callahan Bridge to Portland. Be aware of your surroundings, as the Triads haven't forgotten the turf war you fueled when taking missions from the various contacts in this area of the map. 

Luigi's Club

The Mafia will be preparing to leave Luigi's club and head back to Salvatore's mansion in Portland Beach. If you wait around the entrance, you'll be spotted, making the mission much more difficult than it has to be. Make sure to hang back a bit to avoid alerting anyone to your presence. 

If you've parked far enough away, a short cutscene will play, showing members of the Mafia exiting the club before a trio of Sentinels pulls up outside to collect Salvatore. Once he gets into a vehicle, a blue arrow will appear overhead to show which one he's in. You'll have only a few seconds to plan and execute, as the mission will fail if he makes it back to his mansion in one piece. 

Different Paths to Success

When it comes to the Grand Theft Auto series, Rockstar Games is notorious for granting players an unprecedented amount of freedom. Complete story missions however you see fit, so long as the overall objective gets done. In this case, Sayonara Salvatore is no exception, offering a range of different ways to complete it. Here are just a couple of ways to make the mission easier and more fun. 

Method 1: Perform a Drive-by

One of the most obvious ways of completing this mission is to have a submachine gun that you can use to perform a drive-by. Once Salvatore leaves the club and gets into a vehicle, you can ambush him and pepper his vehicle with bullets. This method is the most challenging of them all, as the other vehicles will try to ram you off the road, making it difficult to get a shot in.

More often than not, you'll be forced to attempt the mission again when he reaches his mansion alive. You'll have to take the Callahan Bridge back to Staunton Island to do it all over again. This method is aimed at those who love a challenge and have a great deal of patience.

Method 2: Surprise Attack

Those who love being sneaky will prefer doing the mission this way. Wait for the message to pop up on screen that Salvatore is leaving Luigi's club, and make a mad dash for Salvatore's mansion. You can try blocking the door with your vehicle, or you will have a split second to drive into the garage at the same time as Salvatore does, preventing the door from shutting.

This method works, but it is very difficult due to the janky camera angle, along with his henchmen, who will attack you, either by destroying your car or mowing you down with their powerful weaponry. If you prefer this method, you may want to try blocking the path to his garage with your vehicle and one of the Sentinels that spawn near his mansion, and attack him with a high-profile assault rifle with manual aim when he approaches.

Method 3 (Preferred): Shoot up the Club

Upon reaching the Red Light District, you'll see a warning pop up on screen, alerting you not to linger around the club. However, if you're quick enough, you can head around the back of the club before Salvatore leaves and wait for his goons to exit. Make sure you have a machine gun, and park at an angle so that you can shoot anyone who comes out the back door.

You'll get a message that says you've been spotted, and members of the mob will try making a run for it. Gun them down, and you'll see another message that Salvatore is leaving Luigi's. Back up and leave the alley, and you'll spot him trying to escape. Squish him like a bug with your car, and the mission will be completed. 

Method 4: Sniper Rifle

You can also get hold of a sniper rifle and take him out from a nearby rooftop.

The Fallout

After completing Sayonara Salvatore, Claude will be rewarded with $25,000, which seems such a measly sum after making enemies with the Italian Mafia. However, you'll have won favor with Asuka and the Yakuza, and will be one step closer to your path of revenge. 

WARNING: After this mission is completed, traversing through Portland for the rest of the game will be dangerous to your health. The Triads and the mob will want you dead and won't hesitate to attack you. Members of the Leone crime family pack shotguns and can destroy your car with a couple of bullets.

It's recommended that you complete as much side content as possible before advancing to the next island. This includes the hidden packages, rampages, stunt jumps, and the myriad of side missions needed for 100% completion.
