While the GTA San Andreas single-player campaign is massive and deeply engaging, the game also features a two-player local co-op / multiplayer mode that opens up some fun, though limited, shared experiences.
The multiplayer feature of GTA San Andreas is only available in the original Xbox and PlayStation 2 versions of the game and the PS3 port. It's not available on PC, Xbox 360, Mobile, and not even in "The Definitive Edition" of the game.
During multiplayer, two players can control characters - one will always be Carl Johnson, while the other can choose from several random pedestrian models, depending on their location.
The mode is local only, and split-screen is not supported; both players share the same view. The two players must always stay within a certain distance of each other.
Activation is done by reaching one of the “2-player icons” scattered through the map to initiate one of the two available modes: Free Roam or Rampage mode.
Co-Op Free Roam (Run-Around)

In Free Roam mode, both players can roam the world of San Andreas together. No strict time limits; you just explore, drive, and cause mayhem together.
The Free-Roam co-op trigger points are marked in-game with an icon representing two red figurines.
Player 2 may choose from a set of pedestrian skins (depending on the region) rather than being locked to one model. Player 2 can even play as some of CJ’s girlfriends - if the relationship is advanced and the character is at home.
Co-Op Rampages

Rampage mode gives both players a single weapon (unlimited ammo) and sets a specific target: a number of kills within a time limit. The two players must work together to clear the objective.
These side missions are marked in-game with skull icons, similar to the Rampages in other Grand Theft Auto games in the 3D era. There are 5 rampage locations available in GTA San Andreas.
In Rampage mode, Player 2’s model is fixed as a “generic Black Female Young Prostitute” (model code BFYPRO).
Limitations & Drawbacks
While fun, the co-op is riddled with limitations - it’s more of a side-feature than a full multiplayer system. Notable restrictions:
- Player 2 cannot pause the game.
- Player 2 cannot change radio stations, cannot honk the horn (even when driving), and cannot regain health (e.g., via vending machines) while Player 1 can.
- Many activities and interiors are inaccessible: minigames like dancing, pool, basketball, vigilante missions, and garage features do not work for co-op sessions.
- Players must stay in close proximity, because there is no split screen, if the players move too far apart the session ends. Also, the two players cannot enter separate vehicles.
- Some weapons are disabled in two-player: e.g., Chainsaw, Sniper Rifle, Rocket Launcher, Parachute.
GTA San Andreas PC Multiplayer Mods
While the original PC version of GTA: San Andreas does not include the two-player local co-op mode found on consoles, the modding community has stepped in to fill the gap. Several PC modifications allow players to experience multiplayer gameplay with fully-fledged online servers.
Popular mods include San Andreas Multiplayer (SA-MP) and Multi Theft Auto (MTA):
- SA-MP emphasizes open-world freedom, enabling players to explore San Andreas together, engage in roleplay servers, or compete in mini-games like races and deathmatches.
- MTA focuses on a more structured multiplayer experience, offering dedicated servers, custom game modes, and scripting capabilities for creating unique gameplay scenarios.
