Open Wheel Races are a Race Mode in GTA Online.
This job has been added to the game as part of the 1.49 Diamond Casino Heist update on February 27, 2020, and is available on PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
This is a mode that can be played by 1 to 16 players.
The future of competitive motorsport has arrived, and it’s in a hurry. Brand new open-wheel ultra-performance vehicles. Seven high-speed tracks. Dozens of split-second decisions, from the tires you use, to whether you take that all-important pit stop. And above all: one seat, one driver, one grand prize.
These are F1-style races, only available to vehicles in the Open Wheel class.
The default lap count is 10, although the lobby host can also set the duration to 5, 15, 20, or 25 laps.
Open Wheel Races have a Pit Stop feature that allows repairing the vehicle and the tire "health".
Tire Types
Before starting up a race, Open Wheel Races allow you to select between three types of tires:
- Soft Tires: offer more grip, but have a lower duration
- Medium Tires: in-between performance, with average grip and duration
- Hard Tires: have less grip, but offer more duration
In general, the grip advantage from soft tires isn't enough to make up for any time loss you'll have in the pits, so it's better to use the hardest tires that will get you through a full race without having to make a pit stop.
Wing Types
The cars themselves have a wide array of body modifications, including front and rear wings that actually impact performance. The general rule is that the larger the front and rear wing, the more downforce will be on the car. More downforce means higher cornering speed but lower top speed.
So having the smallest wings on the front and rear will give you the highest top speeds, but the car won't turn quite as well as if you had the biggest wings and the lowest top speed. The best performance around a track is achieved with medium downforce.
It's important to note that you can also lose your front and rear wings in races, and they will negatively impact performance. Lose your front wing and you'll lose the ability to turn corners very well, and lose the rear wing and your back end won't have any grip causing it to spin around.
The wings can only be repaired in the Pit Stop, as respawning will not help.
Open Wheel Races: List of Races
Open Wheel - Abridged
At last, the feat of engineering no one asked for: a road bridge over the Alamo sea. And who is this great masterpiece for? Is it the much-needed infrastructure that will finally drive capital investment into the economically deprived area of Sandy Shores? Don't be ridiculous. It's a racetrack for the dumbest 1% of the wealthiest 1% of BAWSAQ 100 CEOs. Welcome to progress. Lap race for open wheel cars.
Open Wheel - Brace for Impact
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Los Santos International Airport. The runway is clear for departure. Please note, in the likely event the cockpit catches fire, the emergency team have been dismissed due to budget cuts. Turbulence is expected so fasten your seat belt and familiarize yourself with the emergency exit. Clue: it's straight out the top. Lap race for open wheel cars.
Open Wheel - Dam
Everyone knows the health and safety board are too strapped for cash to stress test The Land Act Dam. Maybe that's why they gave a private company the rights to build a high speed open wheel racetrack. Nothing will confirm its sturdiness like a dozen exquisitely fine-tuned ultra performance machines smashing into the first corner. Lap race for open wheel cars.
Open Wheel - Headwind
What's the last thing an endangered bird sees as it cruises through a turbine at Ron Alternates Wind Farm? Once upon a time, the answer was 'progress'. These days, it's more likely to be an open wheel race car detonating two meters to its left. So, better progress. Lap race for open wheel cars.
Open Wheel - Height of Society
Forget the purpose-built track. For true open wheelers, it's all about the historic street circuit. The narrow straights, the winding hairpins, the sun-drenched glamour of the French Riviera. Or in the case of the Vinewood Hills, the chubby insurance brokers doing yoga on their roof terraces. Lap race for open wheel cars.
Open Wheel - In Due Course
Sure, Europe gave the world underage drinking and open wheel racing. But America showed the world how to do them at the same time. And now, courtesy of City Hall, Los Santos has a city circuit custom-built to showcase the kind of visionary synthesis that makes this great nation what it is. Lap race for open wheel cars.
Open Wheel - It's a Sign

Open Wheel - Keeping Track
Forget racing 50-foot catamarans through the Vespucci Canals. This season the Vinewood elite have jumped on the open wheel racing hype with a track in their own backyard. It's an easy living. Just roll from your sun lounger into the cockpit and get ready for that first-place champagne. Lap race for open wheel cars.
Open Wheel - Lap it Up
In light of the recent spate of preventable drownings at the Port of Los Santos, the Port Authority's audacious rebranding emphasizes the stunning possibilities for exhilarating open wheel racing on a windy dockside with no safety barriers. It's all a question of optics. Especially if you're underwater. Lap race for open wheel cars.
Open Wheel - Life's a Beach
What's more uncomfortable than being in an open wheel cockpit in a g-force inducing slipstream hurtling you hundreds of miles an hour on a twisting road that makes you uncontrollably seasick while dodging competitors as they crash out around you? Doing all that with sand in your pants. Surf's up. Lap race for open wheel cars.
Open Wheel - More Haste More Speed
With the kinetic energy recovery system in your R88 propelling you with all the force and stability of black-market cluster munitions, you might wonder if there's enough room for a conventional racetrack in Fort Zancudo. There's not. Enjoy the S-bends. Lap race for open wheel cars.
Open Wheel - Morningwood Glory
How were the residents of one of Los Santos's most affluent areas convinced to give their permission for a challenging open wheel race right through their neighborhood? Bribery of course. That and the fact no one mentioned it would take place 20 stories up and block all natural light. Do the residents mind? Yes. Do the race organizers care? No. Lap race for open wheel cars.
Open Wheel - New Wave
Close your eyes, breathe in deep, and go to your happy place. Is there an ambience more soothing than waves gently lapping at your chassis, gentle breezes whispering through your air intake, and the violent explosion of your PR4's oxidized carbon-carbon disk brakes? Lap race for open wheel cars.
Open Wheel - Road to Ruin
The Los Santos Freeway has an estimated 71 fatal accidents per 100 miles. We know what you're thinking. Those are rookie numbers. Let's see if we can't amp them up. Lap race for open wheel cars.

There are two ways to make it into the executive boardrooms of the Los Santos business district. Option one, nepotism. Option two, you get into an open wheeler and insert yourself right into the AGM, because nothing impresses the hiring committee like driving a race car through the 40th floor window. Lap race for open wheel cars.
Open Wheel - Urban Renewal
Some say that Davis could never host an open wheel series. But a state-of-the-art pit stop is surely just the kind of public investment that an underprivileged neighborhood needs. So don't think of the track as 'poorly funded'. Those potholes and concrete blocks are the natural obstacles that separate the weekend racers from the real pros. Lap race for open wheel cars.
