The Focus ability in GTA 6 is one of the most interesting new additions to the game's combat system. Here's everything we know about how Focus works, how it compares to Dead Eye in Red Dead Redemption 2, and how it could change gunfights in GTA 6.

Following the release of Rockstar's extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI, we've learned a lot more about the game's mechanics and features. The new footage has given fans a much closer look at what to expect when GTA 6 finally arrives, including several changes to its combat system.

One of the most notable additions is Focus, a new ability that gives the player greater control during intense shootouts.

What Is The Focus Ability In GTA 6?

GTA 6 Focus Ability Targeting

If you've played Red Dead Redemption 2, you may immediately notice similarities between GTA 6's Focus ability and Dead Eye.

However, Focus appears to be more than simply a slow-motion combat mechanic. Rockstar seems to have designed it as a broader gameplay system that can help you identify enemies, interact with the environment, and spot valuable objects during certain activities.

When Focus is activated, the action slows down, and important elements in the surrounding area can be highlighted. During combat, this can include specific parts of an enemy's body, while police officers can also be revealed through walls.

Focus also has applications outside of combat. During robberies, for example, the ability can identify valuable objects that may be worth stealing, including potential targets inside locations such as jewellery stores.

This makes Focus one of the more versatile new mechanics in GTA 6, rather than simply a replacement for Dead Eye.

How Does Focus Work in GTA 6?

The Focus meter appears as a purple bar on the HUD, giving players a clear indication of how much Focus they have available. Because the ability can be used for several different purposes, managing this meter could become an important part of both combat and exploration.

Once Focus is active, time slows down, and specific areas of enemies become highlighted as potential targets. This creates a short window in which you can carefully decide where to shoot before Focus runs out.

The timing of the ability will therefore be important. Focus is not an unlimited resource, meaning players will need to decide when it is most useful to activate it. Once the Focus meter is depleted, the slow-motion effect ends, and the fight continues in real time.

This could make Focus particularly useful when you are facing multiple enemies simultaneously. Imagine you being surrounded during a shootout. Instead of trying to react to several enemies at normal speed, you could activate Focus, slow the action down, identify the biggest threats, and deal with them one by one.

This could become even more important if GTA 6's NPCs behave as dynamically and aggressively as Rockstar's gameplay footage suggests.

GTA 6 Focus Targeting: Body Parts, Vehicles and Objects

One of the most interesting aspects of Focus is the way it can highlight specific targets depending on the situation.

1. Enemy Targeting

During combat, different parts of an enemy's body can be highlighted, allowing you to choose where to place your shots. Red areas represent lethal targets, while yellow areas indicate non-lethal targets.

This means you may not always have to kill an enemy to neutralize the threat. For example, shooting an enemy in the head or chest could result in an immediate kill. However, targeting their arms or legs could simply incapacitate them without killing them.

2. Vehicle Targeting

Focus isn't limited to people, either. When targeting vehicles in GTA 6, the Focus ability can identify important components including the engine block, fuel tank and tyres.

This could give players considerably more control during vehicle-related encounters. Rather than simply shooting at a car until it stops, you may be able to target a specific component depending on what you want to achieve.

3. Police Enemy Locations

Interestingly, Focus now replaces the traditional police indicators on the minimap. Police officers no longer appear on the minimap in the same way they did in previous GTA games. Instead, players are expected to use Focus to determine where nearby police are positioned.

In a way, this is similar to the "Listen mode" found in The Last of Us, with GTA 6 allowing you to reveal police enemies through walls.

This means that dealing with the police in GTA 6 could require considerably more awareness than simply watching the minimap and avoiding their vision cones. As your wanted level increases, you'll need to think more carefully about where officers are located and how you move through the environment.

4. Robberies

Rather than being exclusively designed for combat, Focus also appears to have an important role during robberies in GTA 6, helping you determine which items may be worth stealing.

This could be particularly useful when carrying out robberies at locations such as jewellery stores, where there may be multiple potential targets.

How Do You Recharge the Focus Meter in GTA 6?

At this point, Rockstar has not revealed many details about how the Focus meter will be replenished.

We can assume that certain consumable items could be used to recharge Focus, but this has not been fully confirmed by Rockstar. If Focus does rely on consumables or another limited resource, managing the meter could become an important part of GTA 6's combat system.

Players may have to decide whether to use Focus immediately or save it for a more difficult encounter later. That would make the ability something that needs to be managed strategically rather than a mechanic that can simply be activated whenever a gunfight begins.

Of course, there is still plenty we don't know. Rockstar has yet to reveal exactly how Focus is recharged, how frequently it can be used, and whether there are additional mechanics tied to the ability.

There could also be some cheat codes for PS5 or for Xbox that allow you to quickly replenish the GTA 6 Focus ability. For now, though, we know for sure that Focus will be an important part of GTA 6's combat gameplay.
