The first-ever official preview for Grand Theft Auto VI has been published by Dazed, revealing a huge number of new details about Rockstar's upcoming game, including character progression, relationship mechanics, NPC behaviour, social media, customization, and the enormous amount of research that has gone into creating the world of Leonida.

Dazed spoke with several senior Rockstar Games developers and gained access to new screenshots from the game. With the official GTA VI Extended Look arriving tomorrow, August 27, here is a breakdown of everything we learned from the preview.

GTA 6 Gameplay & World Details

Jason and Lucia

  • Jason Duval is an ex-military drug runner, according to the preview.
  • Lucia Caminos is a fighter who has recently been released from prison.
  • Jason and Lucia's relationship will be central to the story, which Rockstar describes as a “Bonnie and Clyde-type narrative.”
  • Their relationship will reportedly have much greater gameplay importance than relationships in previous GTA games.
  • Player decisions can have consequences for Jason and Lucia's relationship, with Rockstar suggesting these systems can go considerably deeper than the Honor systems seen in previous titles.
  • Rockstar wants to give players significant freedom to shape how Jason and Lucia behave without losing their established personalities.
  • Players can spend time together as a couple or have Jason and Lucia operate independently in the open world.

Switching Between Jason and Lucia

  • Character switching is apparently more flexible than in GTA V.
  • Players can switch between Jason and Lucia while simply travelling around the open world, rather than only during specific missions.
  • One example involves Jason driving while Lucia sits in the passenger seat.
  • Players can switch to Lucia, pull out her phone, and interact with it while Jason continues driving.
  • During a vehicle chase, players can potentially switch between the driver and passenger, allowing one character to drive while the other shoots at pursuing enemies.
  • Jason and Lucia can also explore Leonida together outside of missions, including riding a jetski through the state's waterways.

A More Reactive and Diverse World

  • Rockstar is aiming for GTA 6 to combine the freedom and chaos of GTA V with the realism and immersion of Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • The world is designed to react more naturally to what the player does.
  • Actions that previously might have attracted little attention can now cause NPCs to react.
  • One example given is walking through the streets while openly carrying a rifle, which can cause nearby pedestrians to comment or otherwise respond.
  • Rockstar wants NPCs to feel less like traditional video game characters and more like inhabitants of a living world.
  • Rockstar has developed new tools and production pipelines specifically for GTA 6's pedestrian population.
  • NPCs can vary significantly in age, height, body type, clothing and appearance.
  • Tattoos, piercings and plastic surgery are among the details represented across the population.
  • Different parts of Leonida will have their own distinct populations and cultures.
  • Someone walking around Little Cuba, for example, will encounter a noticeably different selection of people compared with an area such as Mount Kalaga National Park.
  • Rockstar even has a Los Angeles-based operation dedicated almost entirely to developing the game's pedestrians.
  • The studio says its new technology has allowed it to create the most detailed and varied character population it has ever produced.

Food, Exercise & Character Appearance

  • Eating affects Jason and Lucia's weight.
  • Exercise visibly builds and tones their muscles.
  • Their physical appearance can change depending on their lifestyle.
  • Going for extended periods without sleep can affect their appearance.
  • Spending a long time running from the police can also have visible consequences.
  • Multi-day drinking binges can similarly affect their faces and bodies.
  • This appears to be an evolution of the character simulation systems seen in previous Rockstar games, while bringing back elements reminiscent of GTA San Andreas.

In-Game Social Media

  • GTA 6 will feature working social media feeds that players can access through their phones.
  • Social media will form part of the wider culture of Leonida rather than simply being a background feature.
  • The career of Real Dimez can apparently be followed through viral posts appearing on the game's social platforms.
  • The phone will therefore have a considerably greater role in everyday open-world gameplay.

Fashion, Haircuts & Character Customization

  • GTA 6 features a much deeper fashion ecosystem for its characters.
  • Clothing is designed to reflect differences in wealth, lifestyle, taste and personality throughout Leonida.
  • Miami-based stylist Jillian Carr has worked with Rockstar since 2023 on the game's fashion systems.
  • Haircuts and clothing will provide additional ways to customize Jason and Lucia.
  • Rockstar is also putting significant effort into its fictional brands, products, stores and advertising.
  • Rather than existing purely as individual jokes or parodies, these brands are intended to feel like interconnected parts of Leonida's culture.
  • Vice City in particular is heavily influenced by tourism, celebrity culture, social media and constantly changing trends.

Rockstar's Research In Florida

  • Rockstar has spent years researching Miami and surrounding areas while developing GTA 6.
  • A dedicated research team is based in Miami.
  • Rockstar employees have spent time with former criminals, law enforcement officers, club promoters, gun dealers and other real-life figures.
  • The goal is to capture the details of Florida without simply relying on familiar "Florida Man" stereotypes.
  • Rockstar says this real-world research has informed much of the game's fictional population and characters.
  • The research is intended to help the team understand the people, cultures and environments it is recreating before filtering them through GTA's fictional world.

Huge Development Team

  • Rockstar's overall development operation has more than doubled in size since Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • More than 50 real street artists have contributed murals to GTA 6.
  • Some of these murals can be found around Vice City's Stockyard area, which draws inspiration from Miami's Wynwood district.
  • Rockstar's vehicle-handling team includes real racing drivers, who have helped develop the game's driving physics of GTA 6 cars and vehicles
  • The scale of the development effort reflects Rockstar's ambition for GTA 6 to remain a world players can continue exploring for many years.

GTA 6 Looks Set To Combine GTA 5 And Red Dead Redemption 2

Perhaps the most interesting takeaway from the preview is Rockstar's apparent attempt to combine the strengths of its two most recent major open-world games.

GTA V provided an enormous amount of freedom and chaotic gameplay, while Red Dead Redemption 2 pushed Rockstar's attention to detail, character simulation and world immersion considerably further.

GTA 6 appears to be taking elements from both approaches. The result could be a world where players still have the freedom to cause the kind of chaos GTA is famous for, but where those actions have more believable consequences and where the people and environments around them feel significantly more alive.

With Rockstar's Extended Look arriving tomorrow, we shouldn't have to wait much longer to see these systems in action.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
