Grand Theft Auto VI is looking like it will become one of the biggest entertainment events in history based on its record-breaking purchase intention, millions of preorder estimates, billion-dollar expectations and a whole city embracing Vice City.

There might be some indication based on one incredible stat. The report from Circana on October 28th shows just how big GTA 6 could become. The 29% purchase intention is a record for any video game that Circana tracks. But it also shows how big the audience for this game really is. Grand Theft Auto has built up a huge following over the years.

Many have grown up playing GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas. These were eventually their childhood games. Also, many of those same players played GTA 5 back in 2013 and have waited over the past 13 years for this release. That’s a lot of patience. A 13-year wait is no joke.

The GTA 5 benchmark was already extraordinary

GTA 5 earned $1 Billion in 3 Days but GTA 6 could become something else entirely. When GTA 5 released back in September 2013, Rockstar stated it sold at $800 million in the first 24 hours and $1 Billion in the first 3 days. This was a huge amount for an entertainment product. It went on to sell over 230 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most successful entertainment products in history.

The gaming industry has evolved a lot since 2013. We’re now using digital distribution, online communities are much bigger, streaming is a big part of entertainment and social media means people can get excited about the game globally. GTA 6 also has the huge legacy of GTA 5, including GTA Online. So the question isn’t if this will be a commercial success. It’s like it will be a new benchmark.

The Pre-order estimates are already staggering

Another factor is the preorder estimates, which show just how big this could be. Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive haven’t confirmed any exact sales figures. However, there are some estimates from third parties. According to Sensor Tower (via GameSpot) GTA 6 had around 6.08 million digital preorders by October 13th. This meant it earned an estimated $594 million. By October 20th, this had risen to around 6.45 million digital preorders. Giving it around $630 million. These are estimates and not confirmed by Rockstar. These are also only digital sales.

Here’s a prediction from Newzoo, a market research firm, that has tracked historic pre-order and sales projections for GTA 6. They analyzed the preorder figures for GTA 6 back in July 2026. They estimated that around $260 million was spent globally in the first week. They looked at historic purchase data. Including who bought GTA 5. From this they predicted: Around $3.3 Billion.

This is a more conservative estimate and would mean around 37 million copies sold in launch week. Around $4.5 Billion. This is the middle prediction and would mean around 51 million copies were sold in launch week. Newzoo also had a wider range of predictions going up to around $5.2 Billion. This is an estimation. But even the lowest estimate would be incredible.

People are already planning their work schedules around it

People are very excited right now and decide to take time off work for GTA 6. According to a report from Money Magazine, vacation requests for November 19th are up by around 9-17%. This is compared to the usual third Thursday of November.

These figures were collected around 10 weeks prior to release. This wouldn’t all be down to GTA 6, but the timing and anecdotal evidence show it’s contributing to the unusual demand. Some people have requested time off for November 19th and 20th. Others have told stories of their managers knowing why they were requesting time off.

Miami is literally turning into Vice City

The excitement surrounding GTA 6 isn’t just limited to forums, YouTube and Social Media. Rockstar has done some amazing marketing with Miami. The Kaseya Center has a huge Welcome to Vice City sign on the roof. This has gained international attention and has become a popular photo spot. Miami-Dade County has also announced a $3.9 million marketing package with Rockstar Games.

This includes advertising across the county, including Miami International Airport and PortMiami. The Miami Heat are also getting in on the action. They have a Vice City event planned for November 18th. In the real world, there have been some amazing marketing campaigns. Including vehicles, fake restaurants and working with local businesses. This is an unusual amount of crossover.

So mark your calendars! November 19th 2026 may well go down as one of the most significant days in video game history.
