GTA 6 returns to Vice City, Leonida, a tropical, neon urban sprawl with miles of palm trees and bright lights, situated by the crystal-blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean. It's set in the fictional equivalent of Miami, Florida. There's no doubt that Rockstar spent a lot of time deep in the southeastern United States.

GTA 6 is going to have a massive map stretching outside the city and into familiar places inspired by the real-life state of Florida. We've analyzed these recreations and compared the geography and landmarks to their Floridian counterparts.

The game will take place in Leonida with a keen focus on Vice City. The map is a culmination of real-life areas of Florida that surround the general Miami region, straying from the city lights to the rural, remote backwoods and deep into the swamplands.

Ocean Beach vs. South Beach

GTA 6 locations - ocean beach ocean drive

South Beach is one of the most defining, arguably famous spots in Miami and distinctive to the city's color and flashy vibrance. Covered in warm pastel deco condos and the Ocean Drive strip, the three buildings on the beach are basically replicas of the real-life location. Together along the beach stand the 1500 Ocean Drive condo tower, the Royal Palm South Beach Hotel, and the Loews Miami Beach Hotel; rows of palm trees separate them from the bright sand.

The real Ocean Drive thrives 24 hours a day, with people strolling the beachwalk or trekking in the white sand during the day and enjoying high-energy entertainment by nightfall. Along the roads are exotic, expensive cars and wandering tourists from all over. Rockstar's recreation, Ocean Beach, feels more compact with a higher density of palm trees, and a predictably more intense feel than the real Ocean Drive.

Colony Hotel vs. Cortez Hotel

GTA 6 locations - cortez colony hotel

Other real-life hotels such as the Hotel Victor and Hotel Breakwater made appearances, but Rockstar renamed them to their fictitious counterparts, the Hotel Dixon and the Hotel Boardwalk, respectively. One of the more memorable structures is the historic Colony Hotel, renamed "Cortez," a classic Art Deco building with a recognizable vertical front facade, lit in striking blue neon. In the 2002 classic, GTA Vice City, the Colony Hotel went by a more crude rebrand, titled the "Colon Hotel".

The Cortez Hotel shares the same streamlined corners as the real Colony Hotel, along with the color palette and palm trees around the exterior. However, despite the hotels' flashy atmosphere and being on one of the busiest tourist streets, they're relatively small compared to structures nearby on Ocean Drive.

Belmar Condominium Residential vs. Lucia's Apartment

GTA 6 locations - lucia apartment belmar

Built in 1973, the Belmar Condominium Residential was a peachy, salmon stucco building with a distinctive South Florida look, with its angled balconies and warm tones. The real property in Miami was demolished in 2022, but it lives forever in Vice City. Though it seems like an ordinary apartment building, it's featured in GTA 6 as Lucia's home.

The building was five stories high, surrounded by skyscrapers and towering palm trees. The real apartment was eventually bought for $12 million, with big plans for a skyscraper to replace it; however, after being torn down, it's been sitting as an empty lot for the past several years.

Downtown Miami vs. Downtown Vice City

GTA 6 locations - downtown vc downtown miami

Welcome to Downtown Vice City, with a skyline visible across other regions in Leonida, even the Leonida Keys. The lively lights across the cityscape highlight the real Miami, the most notable reference is the stadium located on the waterfront, the Kaseya Center, a multi-purpose indoor arena, home to the NBA's Miami Heat. However, Rockstar renamed the center to the "Sahara Arena", along with the Miami Heat's rebranding to the "Vice City Narcos".

Another large landmark is the Adrienne Arsht Center, renamed to the "Galina Ballet Opera House", an angular structure lit with spotlights. But there aren't just a few similarities between the biggest structures; Rockstar recreated the entire visual atmosphere of Miami's core, with the same familiar look and neon placed intentionally along various places, like the Skyviews Miami Observation Wheel. The Ferris Wheel in GTA 6 is currently nameless but draws clear inspiration from the real one centered in Bayside Marketplace.

GTA 6 gets a lot of things right, like the density, specific buildings, the location of the water, the tropical aesthetic, and a combination of historical and new, luxurious towers, just like Miami.

One Biscayne Tower vs. Megamundo

GTA 6 locations - megamundo .onebiscaynetowerjpeg

In real life, the One Biscayne Tower is a 39-story skyscraper in Downtown Miami, completed in 1972 with distinctive, white vertical fins and a huge antenna mast. In-game, the whopping structure is called the "Megamundo", and the most obvious similarity is the flared-out mullions and dark glass facade. In the extended look trailer, Lucia and Jason enter the Megamundo as private security detail and fight armed gunmen.

Both real and fictional versions have white bases and lighting, though the Megamundo is branded with a rainbow-striped globe near its top. One Biscayne Tower is a Class A office skyscraper, yet the Megamundo's function is different; it's a fictional, satirical Spanish television network and media conglomerate.

Miami's International Airport vs. VCIA

GTA 6 locations - vcia miamiinternationalairport

Predictably, "Vice City International Airport" exists in-game and is modeled after the real Miami International Airport. Even though we see a large "VICE" in a Hollywood-style sign, the real Miami doesn't share the same landmark. However, the sign was popularly used as a movie prop during the mid-1990s and early 2000s in films like "Bad Boys", "Bad Boys 2", and "Transporter 2".

In the trailer, we could spot the air traffic control tower, also known as Tower 10 in real life, standing tall at 333 feet. The structure oversees plane takeoffs, landings, and other aircraft within a five-mile radius.

PortMiami vs. Port Vice City

GTA 6 locations - portvicecity portmiami

PortMiami is a major seaport in Biscayne Bay and is famously known as the cruise capital of the world. The port operates on Dodge Island, and because the port has a water channel over 50 feet deep, it can accommodate massive ships, such as cargo container vessels or cruise liners. "Port Vice City", the fictional version, is located in south Leonida Bay and is briefly featured in the trailer for GTA 6.

Understandably, Rockstar condenses the port, but we still get a feel for its enormity. Both feature a clear view of the Miami skyline, surrounded by rows of cargo, containers, cranes, and an industrial atmosphere that blends into the city.

Wynwood vs. Stockyards

GTA 6 locations - stockyards wynwood

Wynwood is a large cultural hub north of Downtown Miami, renowned for its colorful atmosphere, lively music, and vivid street art. The area also features some bold sculptures; it's a popular spot for tourists and locals to take pictures and immerse themselves in the creativity the city has to offer.

Rockstar's "Stockyards", is better classified as a general version of the Allapattah industrial corridor, but draws obvious inspiration from the real Wynwood because of the murals and graffiti, along with the mix of industrialization and creative arts. Like the real Wynwood, Stockyards differs greatly from a lot of Miami; it's filled with warehouses, garages, and low-rise buildings.

Florida Keys vs. Leonida Keys

GTA 6 locations - leonidakeys floridakeys

The Florida Keys are a chain of small, low-elevation islands that extend over 100 miles off the southern tip of Florida. They're a common destination to scuba dive, go fishing, and explore the islands off Florida Bay. In GTA 6, the "Leonida Keys" are located at the southernmost part of the game map.

The geography is the biggest similarity between the Florida Keys and Leonida Keys, sharing the same chain and the long string stretching outward from the mainland. One of the most recognizable inspirations is the bridge, referred to as the Seven Mile Bridge in real life, crossing over a large expanse of open water. Brian Heder, one of the main characters in GTA 6, operates a boatyard in the Keys, a business that could easily and believably exist in the real Florida Keys.

Providence Canyon vs. Mount Kalaga National Park

GTA 6 locations - mountkalaga providencecanyon

Unlike most areas on our list, Providence Canyon is located in Georgia, sharing very similar topography to the in-game destination of "Mount Kalaga National Park", blending southern Appalachia and the broader American Southeast. In real life, it's a great destination for hiking, off-road biking, and exploring the wilderness. Providence Canyon is the closest canyon to Florida, known for its beautiful pink rocks, red clay gullies, and rich foliage.

Rockstar has described Mount Kalaga National Park as a place dedicated to hunting, off-road trails, forest hikes, and fishing. While the similarities are uncanny, a lot of the ties to the real Providence Canyon are more of a community comparison than Rockstar's official word.

Some elevated parts of Mount Kalaga share similarities to North Carolina's Table Rock Mountain, but this is up for debate on whether they're connected. The real Providence Canyon is a lot more compact than what we've seen from Mount Kalaga National Park, which appears to portray a wider wilderness region rather than a recreation of a specific area.

Clewiston vs. Ambrosia

GTA 6 locations - ambrosia clewiston

In south-central Florida, there is an agricultural town that functions as a blue-collar industrial hub for its massive sugar mills: Clewiston, sitting at the edge of Lake Okeechobee. The real location is surrounded by sugarcane fields and a rural community. Clewiston's slogan is "America's Sweetest Town"; "Ambrosia" mirrors this with "Keeping Leonida Sweet", and instead of Lake Okeechobee, it's now "Lake Leonida".

Ambrosia's similarities to Clewiston are among the closest real-world connections so far, with the same layout and identity revolving around the sugar industry. Ambrosia's sugar refinery is called "Allied Crystal", a company with considerable political influence, while Clewiston's main sugar refinery is called "U.S. Sugar".

The fictional town is also affected by its local motorcycle gang, the Final Chapter MC. In the GTA 6 trailer, we can see the sugar cane fields on fire, which is what farmers in Clewiston do each year before harvesting to remove pests and flammable dry leaf trash.

Panama City vs. Port Gellhorn

GTA 6 locations - port gellhorn panama city

In real life, Panama City, renamed "Port Gellhorn", is a long way away from southern Florida, situated far up north between Tallahassee and Pensacola in Florida's panhandle. Both in-game and real-life versions feature lines of motels, strip malls, pawn shops, and local dive bars. Culturally, one of the biggest ties between the real and fictitious locations is that GTA 6's "Port Gellhorn International Raceway" draws influence from the real Sebring International Raceway.

Rockstar describes Port Gellhorn as "Leonida's forgotten coast", which emphasizes some areas that are on the less glamorous side. Occupied with faded signs, a weather-beaten atmosphere, roadside motels, and empty lots, the area is also filled to the brim with excitement, which is why Rockstar was clearly inspired by both Panama City and Panama City Beach (PCB), which aren't the same thing and can make comparisons a bit confusing.

Both places have polarizing atmospheres; the city is a quieter town that started as a port in the early 1900s, and later became a big spot for fishing and industrialization. Today, the city is a medium-sized municipality with winding neighborhoods. PCB, however, is bright and active, with tourists galore. The vague mix between the two in Port Gellhorn is most obvious in the town's subtle nightlife and tourist businesses.

Florida Everglades vs. Grassrivers

GTA 6 locations - grassrivers everglades

Welcome to the Wetlands! The Florida Everglades is a beautiful, turquoise-soaked wetland that features endless sawgrass plains, murky water channels, and dense swamps. Populated by alligators and lurking aquatic predators, getting around sometimes requires airboats.

In GTA 6, the renaming is a literal reference to the area: "Grassrivers" for its real-life nickname, the "River of Grass". Both terrains are uncanny, with various environmental similarities beyond the obvious, including mangroves, endless sawgrass, ample birds, and a wide-open atmosphere. The Grassrivers is the most obvious, straightforward match to the real place, with few differences besides the high level of crime we normally see in the GTA series.

The waters in both places are shallow, and unlike the cliffs in Mount Kalaga National Park, the Grassrivers and Everglades are very flat with little elevation. Rockstar describes the Grassrivers as "the untamable jewel of Leonida's crown"; similar to the Everglades, the atmosphere is a defining feature of what makes the state stand out amongst the rest.

How Close is GTA 6 to Real-Life Florida?

Overall, GTA 6 features a new world that is brimming with excitement and wildly varied locations across Leonida, just like real-life Florida and the city of Miami. We’ve been lucky to see more insight into the geography and are astonished by Rockstar’s dedication to realism. It's fascinating to spot familiar areas and buildings, especially for locals excited for the game's release.

GTA 6 is set to release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Until then, do you recognize any locations across the American Southeast in the game's trailers? Let us know in the comments!
