Between GTA 6’s emphasis on streamlined controls, more dynamic NPCs, returning mechanics, and detailed gameplay, the game seems to be doing practically everything right, especially when it comes to addressing fan feedback regarding past titles.
Many have previously complained about recent Rockstar Games releases feeling a bit too scripted outside of the open-world gameplay, and much to everyone’s surprise, GTA 6 seems to have addressed this criticism. The latest set of GTA 6 details confirms that the game will be more open with its mission structure in the story mode.
The Rockstar Games Linearity Problem

To understand why the shift toward more dynamic story missions is such a big deal, it’s important to look back at past Rockstar Games titles, particularly Red Dead Redemption 2.
The game became notorious for punishing players for even attempting to go off the predetermined path, leading to unnecessary failures and frustration during the story mode. Nakey Jakey’s video critiquing Rockstar Games’ design goes in depth on this element, explaining how Red Dead Redemption 2 effectively locks players out of certain interactions unless they follow a set order.
The poker game robbery in Saint Denis highlights this problem best since players can access the poker game room before progressing further in the quest. However, because the game requires players to interrogate the gunsmith before speaking to the NPC in the aforementioned room, reaching it via an alternate route does nothing for the player.
Such instances of restrictive game design are common throughout Red Dead Redemption 2, so Rockstar Games attempting to directly address these criticisms in GTA 6 is a big deal. Keep in mind that missions like Farewell Chunky Lee Chong from GTA 3 already allowed players to exercise creativity during the story mode in unprecedented ways by planning ahead before initiating the mission.
Doing so meant stealing the character’s car and planting a bomb on it before starting the mission to effectively skip all of the mission through a creative approach. In the best-case scenario, GTA 6 could see the return of similar levels of creative problem-solving in the main story.
GTA 6 Is Opening Up Mission Design

IGN’s GTA 6 preview reveals that Rockstar Games is making critical changes to how it approaches story missions in the game.
Instead of the studio’s linear, sometimes overly restrictive style, GTA 6 will allow for more player expression and creativity during moment-to-moment gameplay in the story, especially during key moments in missions.
As an example, Rockstar Games’ Rob Nelson describes how players have the opportunity to escape through multiple routes in the first mission shown during the August Netflix Extended Look.
Similarly, he notes that players can take alternate escape routes when driving with Raul to escape the police. The game presents players with an optimal route during this mission, but deviating from this route doesn’t immediately end the mission.
This is something that likely would not have happened in past Rockstar Games titles, especially Red Dead Redemption 2, due to how restrictive this particular release was with its linear story missions and scripted sequences.
According to Rockstar Games, the team has tried to make gameplay elements like robberies and sequences involving the wanted system feel as close to the open-world experience during story mode as possible for an organic gameplay feel. However, players should not expect every story mission to be open-ended.
GTA 6 will still offer plenty of curated sequences that require playing the game according to the developers’ vision and directions. All of this sounds very exciting, so it will be interesting to see how these systems interact with each other.
