We now have more information about the GTA 6 inventory system thanks to the newly released extended look at the game. There is plenty that we already know, and thanks to details from the recent hands-on previews and different interpretations of what Rockstar has shown, we now have a much better idea of how the inventory system will work in the game.
In GTA 5, you may remember that you can carry virtually all of the weapons you own, along with their ammunition, at the same time. However, that is not going to be the case in GTA 6. Rockstar is taking a much more grounded approach to how Jason and Lucia carry weapons in GTA 6, and below we will explain exactly how the GTA 6 inventory system is expected to work.
GTA 6's Weapon Inventory Is Much More Realistic Than GTA 5's

The biggest change in GTA 6's inventory system is arguably that Jason and Lucia cannot walk around with an entire armory hidden in their pockets. It is a simple change, but one that could have a major impact on how players approach the game.
In GTA 5, you can walk around with a pistol, SMG, assault rifle, shotgun, sniper rifle, RPG, and several other weapons available through the weapon wheel. The game essentially treats all of these weapons as if your character is carrying them, regardless of size.
However, GTA 6 is moving away from that approach. According to information from the recent hands-on preview, characters have much less physical inventory space, meaning the weapons they carry need to make sense physically within the world.
The basic idea is that the game will not allow Jason and Lucia to carry more firearms than they could reasonably carry on their bodies. Their physical loadout will therefore be much more limited than what we saw in GTA 5.
This does not mean that you will have access to fewer weapons overall. Instead, Rockstar appears to be separating the weapons you own from the weapons you are physically carrying at any given moment.
You can still have additional weapons available, but you may need to store them somewhere else. Your vehicle is one of the most important places for this, as long guns can be stored in the trunk and other hiding places.
How Many Weapons Can You Carry In GTA 6?

This is one of the most important parts of the new system because the physical loadout is considerably more limited than what players are used to in GTA 5. According to the recent preview, Jason and Lucia can carry two concealed handguns and two long guns.
However, there is an important limitation when it comes to the long guns. Only one long gun can be carried on your back. If you decide to carry a second long gun, it cannot simply be attached to your back as well. Instead, it has to be visibly held in your other hand.
This creates a very different experience compared to GTA 5. For example, imagine you are carrying two pistols, an assault rifle, and a shotgun. The two pistols can remain concealed, while the assault rifle can be carried on your back. If you also want to carry the shotgun, you would have to hold it in your hand.
That limitation could make weapon selection much more important, particularly during missions where players need to decide what equipment they actually want to bring.
Your Car Is Your Armory

Since you cannot carry a large number of weapons on your character, your vehicle becomes much more important in GTA 6. Instead of carrying your entire arsenal everywhere you go, you can use your vehicle to store additional weapons. This means you may need to think ahead before starting certain missions or getting involved in a major shootout.
For example, if you are preparing for a heist, you could decide to keep an assault rifle and shotgun in your vehicle while carrying your concealed handguns on your character. If the situation changes, you may be able to return to the vehicle and change your loadout.
This makes the car more than just a method of transportation. It can effectively become an extension of your inventory and an important part of your preparation.
One important detail is that the exact storage capacity and rules for every type of vehicle have not been fully explained by Rockstar. Therefore, it is better not to assume that every vehicle will provide the same amount of weapon storage.
You Can Pick Up Weapons From Enemies
Another interesting part of the system is the ability to use weapons taken from enemies. The GTA 6 Extended Look showed Jason picking up an enemy's weapon during a firefight. This suggests that players will not necessarily need to purchase or prepare every weapon before they can use it.
This creates an important distinction between the weapons you have intentionally brought with you and weapons you acquire during an encounter.
For example, you could arrive at a location with a limited loadout, get into a firefight, and then pick up a weapon dropped by an enemy. This could give you additional options during the encounter without requiring you to have carried that particular weapon from the beginning.
NPCs Will React to the Weapons You Carry
The new inventory system is not only about how many weapons Jason and Lucia can carry. It also appears to affect how the world reacts to them.
In GTA 5, you could pull out an assault rifle, shotgun, or even a rocket launcher and walk around with it. Although NPCs could react to obvious violence, the game did not always make a strong distinction between simply having a weapon and actively carrying it in a threatening way.
GTA 6 is taking this much further. Rockstar North boss Rob Nelson explained that NPC behavior is more sophisticated in the new game. If a long gun is simply hanging on your back, civilians may not necessarily panic. However, if you are holding that weapon in your hands, people can react differently and begin moving away from you.
