Jason and Lucia are at the centre of GTA 6, with their relationship playing an important role throughout the game. While Rockstar Games has revealed plenty of information about the pair, there are still aspects of their relationship that require some interpretation based on the details we know.

Not every interpretation is simply random speculation, either. Some theories and observations can be supported by information Rockstar has officially revealed, allowing us to connect the dots and get a better understanding of Jason and Lucia's dynamic.

In this guide, we'll take a closer look at Jason and Lucia's relationship, including what is officially known, how their relationship works, and some of the ways it can develop throughout GTA 6.

Jason and Lucia Start Out As A Couple

Jason and Lucia in GTA 6

The most important thing to note is that Jason and Lucia are not simply two protagonists of the game who happen to work together. They are genuinely a couple, and their relationship appears to be one of the central elements around which the story is built.

From the beginning, Jason and Lucia are already romantically involved. This is not going to be a situation where you have to spend dozens of hours completing missions just to make them fall in love with each other. Their romantic relationship is already established when the game begins, which means Rockstar can focus on showing us how that relationship develops throughout the story.

However, the romantic side of Jason and Lucia's relationship is optional. Even if their relationship becomes distant, they will continue to work together as criminal partners.

The game apparently gives you control over how close Jason and Lucia remain romantically, and that could end up being one of the most interesting features in the entire game.

There are essentially going to be two different relationships between Jason and Lucia. The first is their relationship as criminal partners, while the second is their relationship as romantic partners.

Their relationship as criminal partners is fundamental to the campaign. They have common goals, they work together, and they rely on one another during their criminal activities. Their romantic relationship, however, appears to be the part where the player has much more control.

That distinction is extremely important because even if you allow the romantic side of their relationship to deteriorate, Jason and Lucia are still connected through their criminal partnership.

How the GTA 6 Relationship System Works

Jason and Lucia's relationship is not simply something that Rockstar uses during cutscenes. Their relationship is actually tracked throughout the game, and their interactions can apparently change depending on the status of their relationship.

The game checks the status of their relationship, and this can determine how they react to one another and potentially how certain parts of their story develop.

However, there will not be a relationship meter where you constantly see something like "Jason and Lucia: 72/100." Instead, the status of their relationship is shown through the character menu, alongside Jason and Lucia's Criminal Profiles.

This makes the system feel much more natural. Rather than constantly watching a number increase or decrease, you are likely going to notice the consequences through their behavior and the way their relationship is presented.

It is more like having different stages of a relationship, such as being close and romantic, becoming less intimate, growing distant, entering a toxic phase, and potentially reaching the point where they break up. So, you are essentially in control of how you maintain the relationship. This game is going to show how good of a partner you can actually be, lol.

How Can You Maintain Jason and Lucia's Relationship?

Jason and Lucia

There are plenty of ways to maintain and improve Jason and Lucia's relationship. You can text each other, go on dates, walk around together, hold hands, eat together, go to the gym together, participate in different activities, and - of course - perform robberies together.

The important thing is that Rockstar seems to be focusing on the small interactions between the two characters rather than relying entirely on major romantic missions. You can apparently even create dates yourself.

For example, going to the gym together can count as spending quality time together. There are also other activities that can serve a similar purpose, such as going to the zoo, walking along the beach, going shopping, exploring different locations, and generally doing activities that allow Jason and Lucia to spend time with each other.

This is an interesting approach because it makes their relationship feel like something that exists outside of the main story. They are not simply romantic partners whenever a cutscene requires them to be. They actually have a life together.

You Can Ruin the Relationship, But You Cannot Abandon the Partnership

Now, do note that you can apparently damage or even ruin the romantic relationship if you do not maintain it. You do not necessarily have to spend your entire playthrough taking Lucia out on dates and constantly doing activities together. If you would rather focus entirely on the criminal side of their relationship, you can do that.

You can essentially treat Jason and Lucia as two partners in crime instead of constantly focusing on their romantic relationship. However, if you completely neglect the romantic side of their relationship, it can deteriorate.

You can also negatively impact Jason and Lucia's relationship by ignoring their messages. When you're away from each other, they may text or call to check in, and failing to respond can have a negative effect on the relationship.

The more time you spend apart, the less you interact with one another, and the more you potentially mishandle certain situations, the more distant they can become. This is where the relationship system becomes much more interesting.

You are not forced to maintain the romance, but your decisions can have consequences. At the same time, you cannot simply abandon Jason or Lucia altogether because Rockstar has established them as criminal partners.

Jason and Lucia Can Actually Break Up

GTA 6 Relationship System - Jason & Lucia

Now, this is where things get even more interesting. Jason and Lucia can apparently break up because of the relationship system. If you neglect your partner for too long and the relationship continues moving in a negative direction, they can eventually stop being a romantic couple.

That does not mean that Jason or Lucia suddenly disappears from the game. They will still be connected through their criminal partnership, and their role in the main story will continue. However, their personal relationship can change dramatically.

Before the relationship reaches the point of an actual breakup, it can apparently become toxic. This is an especially interesting detail because Rockstar does not seem to be treating relationships as a simple good or bad system. There can be situations where Jason and Lucia are still together, but their relationship is no longer healthy.

They may continue working together because they are partners in crime, while their romantic relationship becomes increasingly complicated. This opens the door for arguments, disagreements, mistrust, and other problems between them.

The interesting part is that this could make Jason and Lucia feel much more like real people.

What About Cheating?

This is another subject that has generated a lot of discussion, especially because Rockstar appears to be giving players more freedom in how they interact with the world and with other characters. However, this is where we need to separate what we know from what people are assuming.

Jason and Lucia begin the game as a couple, so naturally, any romantic interaction involving another character raises questions about whether the game will consider it cheating. At this point, we should not automatically assume that every interaction with another character will be treated as cheating.

Rockstar has not provided a complete list of what the game considers cheating, nor has it explained exactly how every possible romantic interaction will affect Jason and Lucia's relationship.

What we can safely say is that the relationship system creates the possibility for trust, jealousy, secrecy, and other relationship-related situations to matter.

There will also be situations where Jason or Lucia has to decide whether to tell the other person something or keep it hidden. That could become particularly important because hiding something may prevent an immediate argument, but if the other person eventually finds out, the consequences could be much worse.

So, if Rockstar does introduce cheating or cheating-like situations, we expect the important part will not simply be a relationship meter going down. It will be the consequences of breaking trust.

Jason and Lucia's Relationship Is Different From GTA 5

Jason and Lucia Relationship in GTA 6

This is where GTA 6's relationship system becomes particularly interesting when compared with GTA 5. In GTA 5, there was no comparable emphasis on maintaining a relationship between the protagonists.

Michael, Franklin, and Trevor had complicated relationships with one another, but the player was not responsible for maintaining those relationships. Jason and Lucia are completely different. They are both protagonists, but they are also a couple.

That means their personal relationship is directly connected to the game's central narrative. Rockstar can use their relationship to create emotional moments, conflicts, disagreements, and potentially different outcomes.

It also gives the player another way to personalize their experience. Two people could play through GTA 6 and potentially have very different versions of Jason and Lucia's relationship.
