From the recent extended look at GTA 6, it is clear that Rockstar is not simply focusing on visual improvements. The studio has made substantial changes to the game's world and mechanics, and one of the most interesting examples is the design of its roads.

The important thing to understand is that narrower roads could fundamentally change how driving feels in GTA 6. Not every area is going to feature narrow roads, as this appears to be particularly relevant to Vice City. That distinction makes sense given the dense urban environment Rockstar is trying to create.

Rockstar has said that the roads in Vice City are going to be narrower while also featuring denser traffic. When you combine those two changes, driving through the city could feel considerably different from what players experienced in GTA 5, and potentially much more demanding.

Aggressive Driving Will Be Challenging Due To Narrower Roads In GTA 6

In GTA 5, many roads give you enough space to comfortably overtake traffic and drive relatively aggressively. Driving has always been one of the most enjoyable aspects of Rockstar's games, so it was reasonable to expect the studio to take things even further with GTA 6.

However, GTA 6 appears to be moving away from the relatively forgiving road design seen in GTA 5. Rockstar has described the roads in Vice City as narrower and more realistic in scale, while traffic is also expected to be denser. When you combine those changes, there could be significantly less room for error.

That could make aggressive driving much more difficult in Vice City. In GTA 5, you can often accelerate hard, switch lanes while speeding, drive onto the opposite side of the road, or take sharp turns without having to worry too much about traffic.

With narrower roads in GTA 6, doing the same thing could become considerably more difficult. If two cars are already occupying most of the available space, overtaking them may require much more precision. You can, of course, simply crash into them, but it remains to be seen exactly how GTA 6 will handle collisions and vehicle damage.

This could make driving more skill-based, particularly when you are trying to maintain high speeds through the busiest parts of Vice City. Instead of simply finding an empty lane and putting your foot down, you may have to read the traffic ahead, identify openings, and choose the right moment to overtake.

Traffic Will Play A Bigger Role

The heavier traffic in GTA 6 could make ordinary driving more engaging as well. In GTA 5, traffic is often something you simply move around, but narrower roads could make it much harder to ignore.

A busy road could force you to slow down, wait for an opening, or take a calculated risk when overtaking. As a result, even a routine drive through Vice City could feel more dynamic.

Successfully navigating through heavy traffic at speed could therefore require more precision than simply owning a fast car. Experienced players may have a genuine advantage when it comes to getting around Vice City quickly, particularly if they learn how to anticipate traffic and find opportunities to overtake.

Police Chases Could Become Much More Interesting

As this is a GTA game, police chases are obviously going to be an important part of the experience. If a chase takes place in Vice City, the combination of narrower roads and heavier traffic could make these encounters considerably more interesting.

Imagine having a couple of wanted stars while several police cars are pursuing you through a busy street. You may find a way through the traffic while the police get stuck behind another vehicle, or you could end up trapped in the same congestion while trying to escape.

Either situation could completely change the outcome of the chase.

For example, you could spot a small opening between two cars and use it to create some distance, only for the police to become blocked behind the traffic. On the other hand, trying to force your way through a busy road could result in a collision, allowing the police to close the gap.

This could add another layer of unpredictability to police chases. Traffic would no longer simply be something you drive around; it could become an obstacle that both you and the police have to navigate.

Knowing when to take a risk and when to slow down could ultimately determine whether you escape or get caught.

Of course, it remains to be seen exactly how these situations will play out. Police AI, traffic behavior, vehicle handling, and the collision system will all have a major impact on how enjoyable and challenging these chases actually are.

What we do know is that narrower roads could make it harder to rely on the aggressive driving techniques that worked so well in GTA 5.

So, if you want to enjoy high-speed driving in GTA 6, you may have to polish your skills. Speed alone may no longer be enough. Knowing when to overtake, when to slow down, and when to take a calculated risk could become just as important as the performance of the car you are driving.
