After over 500 days of silence, speculation and anticipation, Rockstar Games finally gave us an update on Grand Theft Auto VI, but it's not a good one. The company confirmed what many fans had begun to suspect: the game has been officially delayed.
Originally slated for a Fall 2025 release, GTA VI is now scheduled to launch on May 26, 2026.
The official statement from Rockstar, shared via their website and social media channels, reads:
Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026.
We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.
With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.
We look forward to sharing more information with you soon.
While the announcement finally offers clarity, it came without any new assets - no fresh screenshots, concept art, or teaser clips to soften the blow, unlike what Rockstar did with the Red Dead Redemption 2 delay announcement a few years ago.
Still, the developer’s emphasis on quality suggests that the wait may be worth it. As we move into the second half of 2025, fans are hopeful that this new timeline means a more active marketing campaign will soon follow.
More details, gameplay footage, and perhaps a second trailer could arrive in the coming months, offering deeper insight into what’s shaping up to be the most anticipated video games of all time.
